I realize this is an old post but…..Horses….her entire first album is a great precursor to Punk. I think the first song, “Gloria” is far more noteworthy and possibly more popular than “Because the Night.” “Gloria” is admittedly a reworking of a song by the same name recorded by Them. However, it diverges greatly from the original with several newly penned verses including the unforgettable opening line, “Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine.” I highly recommend giving that album a listen if your only familiarity with Patti Smith is “Because the Night.”
