Red Sox Cheating?
Posted on October 25th, 2013 in Uncategorized | 6 Comments »
Some time after Red Sox pitcher Clay Bucholz is accused of using a foreign substance to doctor his pitches, now Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester appears to be doing the same thing: He was caught on film with a green substance on the edge of his glove, which he repeatedly touches during the game.
Boston: cheating again?
I’d guess the answer is yes—hey, it worked in ’04!—and I’ll bet any reader that you won’t see that same substance on Lester’s glove on game 5.
Thank God the Cardinals won Game 2, is all I can say. They need to beat the Beards.

Amazing that nobody on the Cards objected during the game, isn’t it? Amazing that with six umpires watching, none of them noticed, isn’t it? You must be proud that you and your minor-league sources are keeping the Red Sox honest while none of the people who have an actual stake seem to give a damn. Why do you suppose that is?

Don’t shoot the messengers, Harry! (And there are plenty more people who consider the issue credible than me and a Cardinals minor leaguer; MLB’s response wasn’t exactly dismissive.) It’s now the second time in the season that a Red Sox pitcher has been accused of applying a non-rosin foreign substance to the ball, and the first time was a couple of announcers in Toronto. As for the Cardinals, well, there’s lots of reasons why they wouldn’t make a big deal of it-just having the accusation out there is probably effective enough, and you don’t want it to become a distraction. In any case, it will be interesting to see Lester’s glove in game 5. My prediction: You might see some rosin, but it won’t be green.

Cheating in ’04?
Oh, that’s precious - fan of the only baseball team ever to lose a 3-0 lead.

Ah, the Bleacher Report - I think even the Weekly World News has more credibility. See here for more on why and how they push baseless nonsense for pageviews.

Maybe this is why the Cardinals haven’t made an issue of it: http://m.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/perez-fingers-cards-pitchers/article_e9afb5f3-afcb-5832-8ca9-8ca8614df292.html?mobile_touch=true
I’m not a big fan of the “everyone does it” excuse, but perhaps the players know a bit better than a bitter Yankees fan (you) or a biased Red Sox fan (me) what is truly acceptable between the foul lines.

My husband works for a major player for one of the other Boston teams, who was lunching the day after the first game with a former AAA-level pitcher. They were talking about this, and the discussion basically came down to this: every pitcher has some “dirty” tricks they use, everyone knows this, no team ever asks the officials to look into it during a game because they’re doing it too and don’t want the scrutiny. Color me disappointed, I guess I need to be more cynical.
