An Interesting Dichotomy

I just noticed that Janet Yellen went to Brown for an undergraduate degree and Yale for her doctorate.
By contrast, Larry Summers attended M.I.T., then Harvard.
I wonder how much of their differing world views has been shaped by the philosophical divides between those two sets of schools…..

Very little, I should think.
More likely that long-established temperament and habits of mind helped lead them to those universities. I rather suspect they were who they were by age 18, and college and grad school did not change much that was core to their identities.

I agree with Polonius’s first sentence more than the second. With Larry’s avuncular lineage, he would have been predisposed to go for the kind of economics practiced at MIT and Harvard. The interesting question is what that experience did to him, and what it does to others who study economics at these places. An interesting piece in Harpers on that subject: Saving your children from a Harvard education.
And FWIW in a more tendentious style, The confidential memo at the heart of the global financial crisis.

Harry, I’m fascinated by the link you give to the article about that confidential memo. Investigative journalism is alive and well in some places, it seems. I’m not sure how to judge what it’s worth, but it’s food for thought in any event-a principal aim of work in this mode.

Harry, you described Palast’s style as “tendentious.” I would have found a more genteel or dispassionate style inappropriate considering the content of the memo and its consequences. If you find fault with Palast’s interpretation, please explain. My only objection would be that in calling LHS a snake, Palast has been a bit unfair to snakes.
