How Much Would You Pay to See This Band?

Tickets for the Rolling Stones at the Barclay Center are selling in the thousands of dollars. But this video of the band, playing in London on Sunday night, is just…depressing.

Depressing is right, Richard. Ron Wood and Keith Richards could not be calling it more in if they were in Egypt. And Jagger.
His vocals are so thin and either he can’t stay on the beat or Richard’s is just having some fun.;) Tired and sad.

Agreed, RB and LA Woman. Pathetic. I saw them in NZ 40 years ago next Feb. and it is truly sad to think what a caricature of himself Jagger has become, pretending that’s what he still is.
Last week, on the other hand, my 13 bob freshmen and I saw Dylan, with Knopfler opening at the Boston Garden. Dylan not playing the guitar any more (pretty much keyboard and piano), but with Charlie Sexton et al. that’s fine. What a difference! Changed up arrangements of the older materials, as always, and a great version of Early Roman Kings from the terrific new album Tempest. My fourth show since August! Knopfler’s guitar playing was pretty amazing, as expected, both in his own set and for the three songs he joined for bob’s set.
A lot of the Stones audience are presumably going so they can say they went to a Stones concert. You get a certain number of those at Dylan shows too. They generally talk through much of the show and leave before it ends.

RT-talking at rock shows has become epidemic, as has the depressing practice of experiencing it through the screen of one’s smartphone. Listening is a dying art.
The Stones, though, are already dead. It is remarkable how high the quality of their work was from Beggar’s Banquet through Exile, and how mediocre much of the rest of their work is, with a few exceptions.
Ron Wood-well, the man has not had a musical idea since . . . ever?
I still do love Keef’s sense of rhythm.

If you’re going to see old guys, I say stick to Leonard Cohen.

Leonard’s still pretty good in concert, though arrangements are all familiar and predictable—that’s what sets Bob apart. I saw LC at the Wang in 2009, but won’t be making the shows Dec. 15 or 16.
