Our Friend the Dolphin

They tried to save a drowning man in Australia.
And when they couldn’t, they maintained a vigil around the body until divers were able to retrieve it.
Could the Japanese please stop killing these remarkable animals?

I think Japanese should make a pact with the Americans: Japanese will stop killing dolphins if Americans stop terrorizing and killing innocent civilians (in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan among a rather long list).
And Japanese journalists should make a pact with Richard Blow that each should look at the crimes of their own country where they can do something about it. Rather than making empty meaningless gestures…

Not even sure the previous comment is worth a response. However one characterizes the accidental killing of civilians in a war zone, there is no equating that with the targeted slaughter of intelligent and beautiful mammals. That the Japanese continue to condone and protect this practice is a national tragedy and an affront to human decency. There is no excuse that can justify it and I commend Mr. BRADLEY for continuing to draw attention to it.

“accidental killing of civilians in a war zone”.
When drones attack large gatherings which are bound to contain innocent civilians, it is not “accidental”. Also invading, and attacking largely defenseless nations is not being in a “war zone”. More accurately, it is engaging in massive terrorism.
There can be no “equating” going on here (killing dolphins vs killing human beings). As a principle of basic decency (of which Rich seems a big fan, at least when it comes to important things like airplane seats), it is vastly preferable to look at your own (incomparably larger) crimes before pointing fingers at others for trivial crimes (in comparison).

Dear whatsinaname,
Not sure you and I inhabit the same planet and I am sure we could look at the same set of facts and come to radically different opinions, so this will be my last response. I believe America is a force of good in the world. We may make mistakes (and accidentally killing civilians when terrorists are hiding among them is such a mistake), we do not intentionally target civilians and try to minimize civilian causalities.
You cannot justify the Japanese hunting of dolphins which is why you don’t even try to. You just draw attention away from this atrocity by pointing out that America isn’t perfect. So in your world, dolphin killing is fine or at least better than the actions of American soldiers. I think dolphin killing is absolutely wrong and nothing can excuse it and it should be condemned.
Keep it up Rich.

Whatsinaname-you suggest that it’s worse to kill a human being than it is to kill a dolphin. Why? After all….dolphins don’t destroy the planet or kill other dolphins for no reason. Nor do they invent weapons of war.
I’m suggesting that the more we learn about the intelligence of animals, the more we’ll come to question the morality of killing them.
So yes, I think you can compare the deliberate slaughter of dolphins with the unintentional killing of civilians and decide that the former is morally worse.
