Larry Summers: The Winklevosses are “Assholes”

Fortune reports that Larry Summers, being interviewed by Walter Isaacson at the “Fortune Brainstorm Tech” conference, called the Winklevosses “assholes.”
Here’s the quote:
“One of the things you learn as a college president is that if an undergraduate is wearing a tie and jacket on Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, there are two possibilities. One is that they’re looking for a job and have an interview; the other is that they are an a**hole. This was the latter case. Rarely have I encountered such swagger, and I tried to respond in kind.”
And—astonishingly—it’s true. Summers said it. Check it out—there’s video below.
It’s hard to know where to start with this, but I’ll try.
Did it not occur to Summers that the Winklevosses were wearing coats and ties because they had a meeting with the Harvard president, and they had enough respect for the office and the man who occupied it to get dressed up?
Second, what you’re wearing doesn’t make you an asshole. Unless perhaps it’s deliberately disrespectful, and this was clearly the opposite of that.
Third, whether or not they were assholes should have no bearing on how Summers treated them, and how he ruled on their complaint.
Fourth, the former president of Harvard shouldn’t be in the business of calling Harvard students/graduates “assholes.” Just…no. Not under any circumstances.
Fifth, if the Winklevosses are assholes because they wore coats and ties, what would that make Mark Zuckerberg, who created a website to rank people by their looks and blogged about how Harvard women were like “farm animals“—something Summers should have known, since it was a disciplinary matter before he met with the Winklevosses.
Six, it’s a little creepy how Summers starts this anecdote by almost verbatim repeating his earlier answer from a couple months ago—and then, apparently flush with the confidence of recent successes, adds that startling dig at the end.
Seven, I took some heat for writing in Harvard Rules that numerous Harvard faculty members wondered if Larry Summers has Aspergers. The fact that Summers would so misinterpret the social cue of getting dressed up for a meeting with the president of the university—and the fact that he would find it now appropriate to call former students “assholes”—provides some evidence for that theory.
“Rarely have I seen such swagger,” Summers says. You have to wonder: Does he ever look in the mirror?

When I saw this, my immediate reaction was, “Has any former Harvard president ever used that word on-camera? Has any former university president ever publicly called one of his university’s students an asshole?”
I suspect this is a clumsy attempt to go for an unfettered, west-coast style. You’re right — it does seem studied.

what a sad thing truly. Harvard professors, and especially former Harvard presidents, should understand that their public actions have an impact on the institution, and certainly on students. The use of this language to refer to an undergraduate is a very unfortunate… hopefully students and others will place these remarks in the context of understanding that Larry Summers was the only Harvard President who was removed from the job by the Harvard Corporation, even though they treated with much greater respect than he treated and continues to treat others.

Some people walk down the street, get called an Asshole. That never happened to Pablo Picasso.

Truly pathetic.

Trying to seem cool again, Larry?
Maybe, while you are at it, you could apologize for your contribution to wrecking the US economy.

I’ve often defended Summers, but this was an indefensible moment.
Diagnosis: episodic lack of class.

Apologize? you morons. I am, and have always been, a superior intellect, far smarter than those that allow themselves to criticize me. I have also been the most successful and influential economist in this country… actually, in the world… and certainly, the best president in Harvard’s history. Those who criticize me do it out of sheer envy.
If I say that those kiddos were A-holes is because they were… and don’t think for a moment that my candor stops with young undergraduates… you will soon hear me talk about university presidents, members of the corporation, secretaries of the treasury and even the president. I am just awesome.

One thing is for sure. For better or worse, the old Harvard is dead.

Clearly Summers has adopted the mode of dining out on anecdotes from his Harvard Presidency. Compare his behavior, if you will, to our living ex-Presidents, each of whom seems to understand circumspection. Maybe Cornel West could give Summers some pointers on how Harvard University Professors should comport themselves outside of the classroom.

Right on, Rich.
Someone needs to tell Felix Salmon:

How sad. Harry’s recent comment is so painfully true.
I miss the wisdom and quiet confidence that former Presidents conveyed in their public persona. Larry Summers cleaned out University Hall and ushered in a wave of new administrators with little institutional knowledge or understanding of the college culture.
The old Harvard is indeed dead.

Wow, all I can say is, as an educated man he is fully capable of choosing other words to describe someone. Having said that, I am sure that he has been the recipient of such praise himself, frequently, for that to be the first word that came to mind during the interview. And the fact that he said he “responded in kind”, tells you he knows the field well. Bravo, sir, honesty in an important quality.

Larrry is a dumbfuck idiot. I hate to say it publicly but he turned down a couple (the Winklevosses) that got 65 million off his dumb fuck decision. And he acted like he knew so much. But now his students are extremely rich while he works his 50,000 job. Freaking idoot.
