Who Cares about That Wedding in England?
Posted on April 25th, 2011 in Uncategorized | 19 Comments »
The Times reports that US TV networks are hiring everyone with a British accent they can find.
But I wish the paper had addressed another question: Does anyone care? I don’t. I’m willing to bet that you don’t. As the Washington Post reports, a lot of English people don’t.
Thirty years ago when Diana got married, royal weddings and all they entailed — the 25-foot train, the horse-drawn carriages — were reserved for royals. But now that every bride on TheKnot.com expects no less, is there still a need to watch the real thing? Just look how excited we all got about Diana, and look how that marriage turned out. Fool me once, royals . . .
Also, Harry William and Kate give every impression of being two of the most boring people ever to walk the earth. So, you know…there’s that.
We fought a revolution a couple centuries ago to throw off a monarchy. Why are we having it stuffed down our throats now?

Harry and Kate?

See? That’s how little I care.

If you are the defence department or police department then you care since next year the Britain will host the olympics.
Very important to understand logistics in the context of terrorism and modern warfare out in daylight and the very public aspect the wedding allows a real platform for assessing targets, needs, means and the like.
Tourism is a huge part of the national economy and this will ensure that it remains viable.
Thank you, though, for your thoughts.

I care only because Kate is foxy.

Opiate of the Brit (and in large numbers US, Japanese and Chinese) masses, RB, pure and simple and hundreds of thousands of us troop over there every summer, and buy royal wedding trinkets to prove it all makes sense. That you posted, and I’m bothering to comment, helps keep it all going.
And they do the same over here. They have their Queen and her dysfunctional clan in Buck House, we have the King in Graceland (but ours actually had talent and wasn’t boring like the whole bunch of theirs, and actually died on the throne as we all know).
What I love about this wedding thing is that they make a point of not inviting (elected) heads of state, just “royalty” like Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa, “prince” of the Saudii weekend entertainment resort, aka Bahrain, the suppression of whose subjects Hilary just greenlighted a week or two ago.

Just saw this crowd-pleasing bit from the Daily Mirror, always good for a laugh :
The 29-year-old royal bride-to-be reportedly visited the grave of Princess Diana ahead of her wedding next week, according to the Daily Mirror. “It was very important for William to take Kate to visit his mum just before their wedding day,” a source said.

What would make me get up at 4AM? Only to urinate. NOT to watch the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (AKA Windsor) put on a pure Disney spectacle. Without Mickey Mouse no less.
I plan to take four or five serotonin the night before, just in case. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The Daily Mirror…you’ve got to be kidding. You are reading and quoting the Daily Mirror…yikes.
How dim are you….this is exactly what you are complaining that it is…a marketing exercise.
And, it is better than Trump, the debt ceiling, war in the middle east and other awful things which we have no control over but have to listen to all day long in “the media”…escapism has value.

Umm. That was the point 7:14

Umm right back at ya since you are less than well clear (dry sense of humor not withstanding - it doesnt come across in print)
But, seriously, you read the Daily Mail? Shame on you - a Harvard professor stooping to that level. Or…well, better left unsaid.

I didn’t say I read the Daily Mail — or the Daily Mirror.

Seeing isn’t reading or is it like the Herald - just look at the pictures?

I recommend gin. Very dry gin. And lots of it. Starting at 4am.
Cheers

I brought a bottle of “OLD LADIES GIN” from France, empty of course, just for the bottle. I fill it with Fleischmann’s — a perfectly decent gin at a good price (about ± $12 a half litter). I’ve never had a complaint. Skoal.

I drink Gordon’s but Hendrick’s is a treat.
Richard, take some ganders:
