Columbia’s valedictorian plagiarized a joke! A lengthy one. At length.
Weirdly, though, it’s not even a very good joke. Why would you plagiarize a bad joke?

How can you plagiarize a joke, usually one assumes the joke is passed on, unless someone claims it as their own, did the speaker say it was his own (I guess I’ll have to read the article!)

I see in this line that it was not just a joke but a whole ‘bit’ or act (or “schtick”)

Actually, Liz, comedians take this stuff pretty seriously, even when the joke isn’t particularly long. And they should! Writing a good piece of material is no easy thing.
