Twitter in the **itter?

As many of you know, I’ve long argued that Twitter is over-hyped and little-used.
Now a new survey finds that, while most Americans have heard of Twitter, not many of ’em use it!
Only 7 percent of Americans are actually using Twitter and Facebook remains the social network of choice. The report notes, “Despite equal awareness, Twitter trails Facebook significantly in usage: 7% of Americans (17 million persons) actively use Twitter, while 41% maintain a profile page on Facebook.”
Seven percent is actually higher than I would have thought. I’m going to guess that 7% of Americans have signed up for accounts, and maybe .5% Tweet (argh) on a regular basis.

P.S. Possibly my favorite headline ever.

Twitter is nothing more nor less than a faster, abbreviated version of a social networking site like Facebook, and you can decry the advent of oversharing and underthinking it represents, but it’s all of a piece. So why the hatin’? That the hype about Twitter centers around celebrities, and that a lot of twits seem to twitter, says more about our culture than about the actual and potential utility of Twitter. There are valid uses (see e.g., Iran) and there are idiots doing idiotic things on it. You seem to want it to die, and quickly — and I wonder why.

Richard, and I say this with fondness, just gets on kicks and has a hard time stopping himself sometimes.
I wouldn’t wonder why.
