Those Crazy Catholics*

They’re celebrating Good Friday by attacking the New York Times, saying the newspaper is on a crusade against the Church.
The Vatican yesterday delivered an extraordinary, scathing blast at The New York Times for going into “attack mode” over Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church’s role in sex-abuse scandals.
Rome’s doctrinal chief said the Times “lacks fairness” and was “rushing to a guilty verdict” by alleging the then-future pope failed to defrock a priest who molested as many as 200 deaf boys in Wisconsin more than 30 years ago.
And that was downright reasonable compared to the statements of some other Catholic higher-ups.
Meanwhile, an Italian priest and exorcist went even further in condemning the Times — saying its coverage was “prompted by the devil.”
“Because he is a marvelous pope and worthy successor to John Paul II, it is clear that the devil wants to grab hold of him,” said Father Gabriele Amorth, 85.
The devil? Hmm. Since the Times is owned by a Jewish family, I wonder if there’s an anti-Semitic tinge to this assault on the newspaper on behalf of an ex-Hitler Youth pope?
Which makes it all the more ironic that today a high-level Catholic priest compared newspaper reporting on Church cover-ups of pederasty to…um…the Holocaust.
[Pope] Benedict sat looking downward when the Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa, who holds the office of preacher of the papal household, delivered his remarks in the traditional prayer service in St. Peter’s Basilica. Wearing the brown cassock of a Franciscan, Father Cantalamessa took note that Easter and Passover were falling during the same week this year, saying he was led to think of the Jews. “They know from experience what it means to be victims of collective violence and also because of this they are quick to recognize the recurring symptoms,” he said.
Good thing that’s not offensive—you know, in defense of an ex-Hitler Youth member and all.
It’s what you might call a love-hate relationship with the Jews! On the one hand, you blame them; on the other, you claim empathy with one of history’s greatest horrors.
Because, yes, it’s the priests who are the real victims here.
I will give the CC some free advice (free, ‘cuz I didn’t invent it): It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up, that brings you down.
Someone has to grab these senile old fools by the cassocks and shake some real-world sense into them.

Clearly not a reference to *all* Catholics, just the ones discussed above.

Please keep in mind that there are honourable people on this continent of Germanic descent who do not have a clue about Hitler’s youth movement and weren’t even there then. On this continent, German/Austrian people or those of that descent are industrious, hard-working, strict, disciplined, tend to be clean freaks, organized, inventive, practical, very patriotic, and are sick and tired of being held accountable for Hitler’s crimes. Just as there are Muslims on this continent who are sick and tired of being held accountable for Osama bin Laden’s crimes. Especially by WASPs.

WASPs who have their own extremely dirty linen to wash.

A little ethnic stereotyping going on here? ” . . . industrious, hard-working, strict, . . ” and so on?????? Any lazy, sloppy Germans out there? Or perhaps just average folks with no cleanliness hang-ups?

Yeah, Einstein and Schweitzer always looked like they’d stuck their finger in a light socket, Von Braun who made rockets and bombs and stuff, Beethoven was deaf as a doornail so was likely messy because he was playing the piano all the time, who knows about Bach and Mozart and Wagner (he was a little weird), they were always playing around too, then there was the Schindler guy who reminds me of Stephen somebody, you know the guy who makes the movies, and then there was Bernstein and Silverstein and Goldstein or maybe it was Goldstein-hur, do you think? And then there was Nimitz (think he has a boat named after him), I could go on but I’m busy dyeing Easter eggs with a little kid. Have to go….

Sorry, raspberryhollow, I tend to get a little passionate about this and over-react. I never was but my parents, who had spent all their lives in this country, arriving in 1913, were persecuted by neighbours, WASPs of English heritage, and accused of being Nazis. There was no communication at that time with relatives in Germany so they had no idea what Nazism was. I’m sure there are Japanese Americans who experienced this also, in fact I know they did. It’s tough to take. Given the surnames of many well known German Jews who were persecuted by Hitler’s Germany, it seems pretty safe to say that at some point in history, they clearly must have got along pretty well and if fact might have been, shall we say, “close”? My mother’s best friends and playmates were Jewish. Her family didn’t seem to have a problem with it. I don’t condone for one minute what Hitler did, and anyone who denies the holocaust happened, is out to lunch. For one thing, the Germans kept meticulous records, a common characteristic of their race, which damned them when they went to trial. I should add that I had German relatives who died in Hitler’s concentration camps as dissenters. I consider all this valuable insight myself but I’m sorry if I offended anyone.

Hey Rich,
Thought I’d just see what you were up to these days. Glad to see you are taking the high road as well as using your talent and education towards such insightful and fair reporting. Do you even know what defrocking means? Have you bothered to read some of the line-by-line critiques of the NYT stories? I’d like to see the molesters and the priests and bishops who covered them decorating the front of the Duck Tour boats and Cantalamessa sounds like an idiot here, but blog entries like this only reflect your unquestioning belief in the NYT and a clear willingness?desire? to sling mud at the R.C.Church. Look in the mirror. You still have some of it drying under your right eye.
