“On April 25, 1978—the day the ear-shaped, Astroturf-skinned, megaphone-nosed Muppet reject made his first appearance—Philadelphia lost its last ounce of respectability,” Yankee fans said yesterday.”
—The New York Post, on the Phillies’ mascot, the “Phanatic.”

—Patrick O’Neill, 22, of the Bronx
“Their fans are second-rate and so is their city.”

Why bring more attention to the NYP’s reptilian approach to the news. Being for the Yanks does not have to mean denigrating a great city-blaming Philly for Eagles fans would be like blaming NYC for I-bankers and other moral detritus. Both cities have their flows, and both cities deserve better.
Phillies are the defending champs, have great come-back record, and defeated the Dodgers. All are worthy of respect.
I hope the Yanks sweep, but Phillies are a fine team. Embracing the Post like this is unnecessary.

flaws, no flows.

This is why the Yankees — and their fans — are truly despicable, that they can not bring themselves to respect a very good team that has made it to the World Series, and are the reigning World Champions. Root for your team, not by disparaging the other.
One can only hope this gets the Phillies fired up

Perfect example of how New York was once a great city, but no longer

It takes the Yankees for me to root for the Phillies, making me despise the Yanks all the more for putting me in this position of nose-holding alliance.

Look, first of all, a little sense of humor is in order here, people! If you don’t see the humor in a major newspaper devoting an entire article to degrading the other team’s mascot, then, alas, I fear for the future of humanity.
Second, come on. Philly is an awful city. Just awful.

Why? It has many elements of what makes a city great: a first-rate orchestra, a first-rate art museum, great universities, more of its historic core preserved than anything Manhattan can claim. True there are vast stretches of the city that are in abysmal condition, but that isn’t true of New York?

Um…no. Not really.

until beaten, the Phillies are the World Champs

At least Philadelphia is a real city, with real delights and pleasures, as well as real problems. And not a Disney land fantasy of a great city, which is what New York has become. It used to be a real city. Now it is, well, comfortable. Need I say more?

So New York either has vast stretches of the city that are in abysmal condition, or it’s a Disneyland fantasy of a great city, according to Philly boosters above. You guys should talk and figure out which way you want to go here.

“Quotes of the Day” — thus disproving the often bandied about claim by Yankees fans (when playing a particularly important game against the Red Sox) that Yankees fans are cultured, impassioned, thoughtful fans of the game and only Red Sox fans are uncouth, uncultured, loud mouthed, blowhards. ha ha ha
