And of course it’s true what he said — the arrest was stupid. But I think being so quotable was a big mistake: now this part of the press conference steals all the oxygen from health-insurance reform. I pray we don’t someday read about this in another Theda Skocpol book about how the status quo won again.
On the other hand, the rest of the press conference was pretty dull and the president seemed a little lethargic. So not that much was lost in the Gates distraction. The White House needs to ramp up and really start raising public awareness (read: demonizing insurance companies (not hard to do)).

I’m with you all the way on what matters, health care reform, and I’m still with the president in spite all sorts of choices he has made, particularly on economic issues and the team he put together on that, that seem puzzling.
This however was an incredible blunder, and unless Crowley can be turned into a Fuhrman (is he one?), this will be hugely damaging to a cause you and I believe in.
