…for patriots and Yankee fans.
Even though Brazil poured it on in the second half and won, 3-2, still, for the US to beat Spain and score twice against Brazil is pretty impressive. Time to get excited about the World Cup!
The Yankees swept the Mets.
The Sox lost, so the Yanks are now three back…

Seriously, Richard. You think Ortiz is back on the juice because his hitting picked up a bit. A-Rod has as many hits in the last week as he had the rest of the month of June. Why?

I think A-Rod is playing himself back from injury—the hip injury he had earlier this season.
In any event, his slump was not nearly as dramatic as Ortiz’s….and Rodriguez is genuinely a great athlete. Watch him in the field, where his play has also improved dramatically in the past few weeks as he’s gotten more comfortable testing his leg. He made some great plays against the Mets last night. Meanwhile, I understand that Ortiz just probably played his last game at first for the season unless the Sox are in the Series?
However, if you’re suggesting that both A-Rod and Ortiz are recurring steroid users, I wouldn’t rule it out just because I happen to like the guy. (Although I don’t happen to like A-Rod that much.)

I think steroids wouldn’t have these sudden Lazarus effects on either player and that they are both head cases.
On another day we can debate the connection between being a “truly great athlete,” whatever that means, and being a winner. (Think of A-Rod v. Tim Wakefield, say.)

You won’t get a lot of fight from me on your second point, Harry! I’d think of A-Rod vs. Andy Pettitte, for example.
On another occasion—I have to head out now—I will discuss the many similarities between Jason Giambi and David Ortiz.

By the way, the Yankees usually seem to do pretty well against Wakefield….

I suppose the Red Sox bullpen must have stopped taking steroids after the 6th inning last night.

This is about to get bumped to page 2, but there’s a very convincing post that age may be responsible for Ortiz’s drop-off here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/joe_posnanski/06/29/james.33/index.html
An awful lot of hitters have dropped off a cliff in their age 33 season, including many from before the steroids era.
