More Palin-Bashing

You know, when John McCain first chose Sarah Palin as his v-p candidate, I took a little grief for remarking that I didn’t much care for her accent. (You know who you are, grief-givers.)
So I was listening to the radio this morning, and NPR played a few excerpts of Palin’s interview with Katie Couric, and, well, I’m just going to come out and say it:
Sarah Palin’s accent makes her sound stupid.
And I don’t think she is stupid. Ignorant, maybe. Uneducated. Un-curious. But I don’t think she’s a dingbat.
It’s just that when she says something like, in response to Couric’s question about whether Palin could give her one specific McCain attempt to support regulation, “I’ll try to find you some and I’ll bring them to ya“—well, she sounds dumb.
It’s a fine line, right? In Fargo, where the accent was basically the same, Francis McDormand made it sound sort of sly and knowing. Maybe it’s because we knew that her character was intelligent and she used the accent as a tool for putting people at ease and playing down her smarts.
Palin, not so much…. Because we don’t believe in her intelligence, we don’t interpret the accent in a positive light. And when we hear someone like Tina Fey make fun of it, it registers: Not so bright. Fairly or not.

This is a subjective judgment of the sort that feeds into Republican identity politics. The GOP LOVES it when Democrats indicate that they have disdain for the way someone talks or behaves culturally. It’s worth tens of thousands of votes in the middle north and west of the country.
The main reason Palin is doing so badly is that she rushes her words. If she can learn to take a deep breath at the lectern she’ll outperform expectations (a low bar) on Thursday.

Just a reminder -
(Abraham) Lincoln’s voice was, when he first began speaking, shrill, squeaking, piping, unpleasant; his general look, his form, his pose, the color of his flesh, wrinkled and dry, his sensitiveness, and his momentary diffidence, everything seemed to be against him, but he soon recovered.
-William H. Herndon letter, July 19, 2024
Her voice really is the least of her problems.
9/30/2008 10:27 am
Even Republicans think she’s dumb now, SE. I’m trying to stick up for her!
9/30/2008 10:48 am
Really? It’s a form over substance post to me.
9/30/2008 10:53 am
Isn’t this less a question of accent, than of diction? In the example you’ve given she’s using slang, or casual language, when she’s speaking in a context where we’d expect formal language. Bush does this a lot, using informal language in the oddest settings (e.g. “al Qaeda—the very same folks that attacked us on September the 11th”-though it’s especially peculiar that he uses the folksy “folks” here-“bad guys,” etc.). But I heard a clip yesterday, when Obama was repeatedly saying “gonna” in a speech. Political speech is perhaps becoming more casual, or perhaps a distinction between formal and informal language in the public arena is being dissolved.

Just another reason why this is a bad idea to focus on….

Translation: ugly people, or people who sound ugly, please go away — or at least worship me. ???
But seriously: it isn’t that we question her intelligence, its that we question her experience and expertise. She might be quite capable in national role given some time and background. Her answers, though, indicate she’s completely unqualified, so the accent just nails that down.

Richard, I think all you have to do to put these criticisms to bed is to make fun of Barney Frank’s accent. Let’s hear it — a good old fashioned stereotyping, I-don’t-like-it lampooning of the way a gay liberal talks. SP has much, much worse problems than her accent or her diction.
9/30/2008 10:42 pm
Harry, I think we’re just going to have to disagree on the first part . In any event, perhaps Beecham is correct that it’s really more a matter of diction—when Palin says”doggone” or “you betcha,” with that silly, know-nothing grin, she comes across as an airhead.
In any case, I think Thursday will be fascinating.
9/30/2008 11:20 pm
Fascinating and disastrous I hope, but Schmidt/Davis will give her a couple of Biden-baiting lines that may bring out his flakiness too — though he is not the issue she is given Obama’s comparative youth and apparent lack of medical liabilities. The real problem and the real horror is that her stupidity and the various iterations of it may not be enough to count her and McCain out.
RB, I do think you are in a bit of a cultural bubble as to her accent, and I trust Harry of the West on that, if we are talking about turning voters on or off on the states that are going to matter (not yours or mine).
Doesn’t Frank have more of a lisp or whatever than an accent, btw?
10/1/2024 7:38 am
RT, I don’t think it’s a cultural bubble; a cultural prejudice, perhaps, but I get the feeling that an awful lot of people around the country feel the same way, so I don’t think it’s a bubble. After all, as I pointed out, Fargo made fun of just this accent, though in nuanced ways (the accent could be used to reflect cluelessness, as in William H. Macy’s character, or sly understatement, as in Francis McDormand’s).
None of this is much relevant to campaigning, of course, and similarly it’s absolutely no reflection on Palin’s intelligence. And maybe in some states that matter (Minnesota, Colorado?) they’ll like her for the accent. I suspect that in some states that matter they won’t think much of it. (Virginia? Florida?)
A better comparison than Barney Frank—whose accent, lisp, whatever, probably would be an issue if he were running for president—is Michael Dukakis. Didn’t his Boston accent, even though it was relatively mild, make him seem provincial (to some) back in 1988? Did it add to his sense of otherness to voters in the, uh, states that matter?
(Similarly George H. W. Bush’s lockjaw—”just a splash”—didn’t help him much.)
But perhaps they were just living in a cultural bubble…..

Accents don’t make people sound stupid. The content of their speech does. Only shallow shortsighted individuals judge on those kind of surface qualities.
“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” - Abraham Lincoln
10/1/2024 1:47 pm
I’m not so sure that’s true, Anon. Gomer Pyle’s accent didn’t make him sound stupid? Jeff Spicoli’s? Any Valley Girl’s?
10/1/2024 2:03 pm
Those are caricatures, not real people. Again the thrust is content. Not form over function.
(And fyi - Caricatures are satirical drawings, plastic representations, or descriptions which, through exaggeration of natural features, makes its subject appear ridiculous.)
10/1/2024 2:09 pm
Gomer Pyle? Okay, sure. A caricature. But there are lots of Spicolis and Valley Girls out there. (Ever heard Paris Hilton speak?)
There’s also the existential point you implicitly raise of whether Sarah Palin is, in fact, a real-life caricature, down to her accent…
But thanks for the definition of caricatures, though.
10/1/2024 3:13 pm
Leave her alone! It’s a great accent! (And that’s coming from a lefty!)
People make accents sound stupid, not the other way around. Think of N.Y./N.J. accents. East Coasters have a very sharp accent (some might say grating), but depending on who it’s coming from, it may or may not sound dumb. If it’s an erudite Long Islander, it doesn’t. If it’s a Queens high school dropout, it does.
In reality, it’s neither. It’s what they’re saying.
10/1/2024 3:57 pm
“But seriously: it isn’t that we question her intelligence, its that we question her experience and expertise.”
Especially when compared with Obama’s.

“A woman who utters such depressing and disgusting sounds has no right to be anywhere—no right to live. Remember that you are a human being with a soul and the divine gift of articulate speech: that your native language is the language of Shakespeare and Milton and The Bible; and don’t sit there crooning like a bilious pigeon.” - Henry Higgins from “My Fair Lady”
10/1/2024 4:39 pm
As for dumb? I don’t believe so. She’s probably more intelligent than the author or most that have left comments. I look at what she’s done and where she is at. It’s easy for many to think she’s less intelligent because of her accent, and even for some of her comments, but she is far from dumb.
10/1/2024 4:45 pm
Maybe I should not really be worried about Palin as VP. I am more worried is is McCain is unable to finish his term is when I think the problem starts.
10/1/2024 4:48 pm
You libs are full of shit. Find something else to harp on, like that moron your offering up as a presidential candidate. Lots of unanswered questions on that clown…
10/1/2024 4:49 pm
I fully support Mr. McCain and Mrs. Palin in their quest to become president and vice president respectivley.
10/1/2024 4:49 pm
it’s not what her voice sounds like that worries me. It’s what comes out of her mouth, no matter what her voice sounds like, that worries me.
10/1/2024 4:51 pm

10/1/2024 4:53 pm
Who is this idiot pretending to be me? YOU SPELLED MY NAME WRONG. But you’re right, I do support Mr. McCain.
10/1/2024 4:54 pm
As for Barney Frank, now there’s a real winner ! Democrat no less…
10/1/2024 4:55 pm
It is interesting , and humerous, how people like to bash others who are way more successful than themselves.
10/1/2024 4:57 pm
Palin is just fine. I’ll take her any day over that empty suit they call Barack Obama.
10/1/2024 4:57 pm
It’s not the accent; it’s the drivel that carries the accent. We gave George Bush a pass on his lack of curiosity and intellect, assuming that he’d at least have smart friends. I’m not willing to make that mistake again. Sarah Palin is as dumb as a stump.
10/1/2024 5:00 pm
Way more successful ? The democratic party is all about abortion, homosexuality, same sex marriage, ect… Yeah, that’s my definition of successful. Democrats and their liberalism have destroyed this country.
10/1/2024 5:02 pm
I think you democrats are all speaking out your asses, don’t ya know.
10/1/2024 5:04 pm
Is this all you have to do?? Talk about STUPID!
10/1/2024 5:06 pm
Those who are calling her dumb are the ones who are dumb - in the fact that they don’t have the ability to see intelligence when it is in their face! — and really an accent (which I don’t detect) is not a reason to call someone dumb —- look at the Afro Am accent we have running on the Dem. ticket??? — not that is a problem! as well as his evident LACK of any real experience
10/1/2024 5:07 pm
liberals are disgusting - especially the Harvard types that are
just plain arrogant like Barack Hussein Obama.
10/1/2024 5:10 pm
Well … if THIS isn’t the center of intellectuals !!
Wake up people! It’s about the issues which affect our physical country, our economy, our general safety and our collective futures. Bush is a moron. We deserve something better … and focusing on an accent isn’t focusing at all.

10/1/2024 5:16 pm
Everyone who speaks, speaks with some type of dialect. Dialect is not an indicator of intelligence. The dialect a person speaks is a tool for communicating with those around him/her. We speak like those we communicate with. Furthermore, one dialect is not better than another dialect. So to call Sarah Palin stupid because of the way she speaks is inappropriate and frankly an ignorant comment. You have a dialect as well, and I’m sure that you would sound different to Sarah Palin, but that doesn’t make you stupid. Instead of judging her speech, listen to her message and make your opinion of her based on where she stands on the issues, not based on the fact that she talks different from you.
10/1/2024 5:20 pm
The contest is this, Can Biden put both feet in his mouth at one time?? Too bad he has more to worry about then an accent!!

Anyone is entitled to an accent. Her’s is part of her charm, But the screeching /whining that she seems to turn off & on at whim depending on the audience, the topic, and the corner she is in, is intollerable. God forbid that we should ever have to listen to it on a weekly or even daily basis as commander & chief or vp.

There are MUCH bigger issues in this election than what Palin’s accent “sounds” like.
Personally, I think she is intelligent, but she still scares me a bit, just as McCain does. However… Obama and Biden scare me more.
Seems that is the sad state of affairs in politics anymore. It’s not a matter of who you want to win, it’s more a case of who you’re afraid of getting in.
It’s like your doctor coming to you and saying “well, you have two choices, you can have a heart attack or a stroke, pick one”.
Stop debating the minutia, like Palin’s accent or Frank’s lisp. The real subject should be who is going to be able to fix the country, or, at least, cause the least amount of additional damage? That, unfortunately, is McCain / Palin, like it or not.
Kind of wish Richardson had made it further, or that Powell had chosen to run, but that’s just me…
10/1/2024 5:47 pm
Oh that’s a fresh opinion - educated people from universities such as Harvard are what’s ruining this country, rather than the uneducated members of society, or those with closed minds, or who cling to their personal interpretations of religion to use as an excuse to withhold rights from others… Perhaps you might want to remember that all men (and women) are equal in this country per the Constitution… and that even includes you Republicans!

10/1/2024 5:55 pm
The accent isn’t relavent; it’s the UN-presidential screech, combined with the uninformed intelligence, and the deceitful antics she & McCain are participating in, & it is the audacity of the Republican party to offer us a no more qualified person than this that insults me & has turned me 180 degrees away from my past impression of McCain & any good that the party claims to stand for; including anti-abortion. I will vote for the sake of my neighbor & brother & the Golden Rule. I will vote for the sake of my family in combat. It is not Palin who I want calling the shots or even involved when we are at war. And if McCain cannot even look Obama in the face how can he possibly face a world leader. No wonder he doesn’t want to meet with them.
Lets get REAL; the world and the U.S. is way to serious to let this mockery endure to the Oval office.
10/1/2024 5:58 pm
The reason she’s doing so terrible is because… Palin is a politician, they are all evil. I love reading all the bickering… Republicans bitch at Democrats… Dems bitch at Reps. Your all wrong… While your all so busy fighting each other… You’ve let evil people take over this country. Washington doesn’t care about you! Either Side.
10/1/2024 5:58 pm
I don’t like her voice…not just the accent but the tone. That doesn’t matter a bit, I don’t need to listen to her. What concerns me is that when asked what magazines she reads, she couldn’t even think of “Time” Magazine?? It ‘s not that she said “I’ll have to get back to ya”, it’s that she shouldn’t have to get back to “ya” on John McCain’s positions. I’m sorry…it’s elementary. I think she is qualified to be Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska and even Governor of Alaska. I lived in a town of 5,000 and the mayor was a friend of mine. I know exactly what her responsibilities were. I would not consider her qualified to even run the city of 1,000,000 I currently live in. Palin is only Governor of Alaska because it’s Alaska. She would not be qualified to be Governor of even Arkansas for instance and would never have won there. I have lived in the north country very close to Alaska and I know how completely different and small town it is. The mayors of the towns in these areas are “six-pack” citizens who get in their half-tons after a Council meeting and go out and shoot moose. Really. They are in no way qualified to be Vice President of the most powerful (and that is pretty much up for debate these days) country in the world. And that brings up another point. The next Vice President is going to have to work very hard to pull America up by its boot straps and regain its position in the world. My biggest concern is that she is Vice President to a walking health hazard and could be your next Commander in Chief. If that doesn’t terrify you…in these frightening financial times…with two wars underway, I don’t know what would.
10/1/2024 5:59 pm
Where are all you people coming from? Did this blog get linked to some weird political Wayne’s World? You don’t “sound” like regulars.
Anyway, the bottom line is, a vote for McCain is a vote for the same failed Republican policies and arrogance we’ve been drowing in for the last 8 years. That’s a pig, whether its got lipstick or not.
10/1/2024 6:01 pm
I see Mr Bawny Fwank does not consider the antics of Fannie Mae to be a “Pwoblum”. Lets get real does she buy 2 ply bathroom tissue versus 4 ply. The only thing ignorant or stupid is spending this much time on a accent. Didnt our buddy Bubba Bill Clinton talk with a accent and everybody loved him. Get real….
10/1/2024 6:02 pm
Hey forget the accent, how about that spastic finger on her right hand? She’s going to get that broken if she keeps pointing it in everyone’s face.

She’s not a bad candidate because of her accent and however that may make her appear to people - she’s a bad candidate because she is a ridiculous ultraconservative christian with an affinity for extreme right wing thought… exactly what has brought this country down to this level in only 8 short years.. If only Floridians could have learned how to count!!!!
10/1/2024 6:09 pm
“Accent Schmaccent”… I respectfully disagree.
Just look at the occurences of the last couple weeks on Wall Street. The market is in the tank because lending institutions got greedy and started giving loans to anyone that could fog a mirror.
Now, if you look back over the last 8 years, GWB tried several times to get reform initiated in congress, and was shot down every time.
As recently as 2006 (may be 2005, going from memory here) GWB recommended that Fannie and Freddie both be better regulated. However, the oversight committee basically told him to pound sand. By the way, the chair of that committee: Barney Frank (Dem).
I, personally, cannot stand GWB, hated him from the moment I heard him speak. Could tell he was a liar, fraud, and idiot all wrapped up into one. However to blame everything that has occurred on GWB, or the Repub’s because he happens to be in the same party as them, is short sided and ignorant.
There are almost 600 elected officials in Washington that run this country, and they aren’t “all” Republicans.
By the way, remember the promises of the Dem’s two years ago during the election cycle? You know, lower gas and heating fuel prices, more jobs, an end to war, etc…?
Well, they’ve had the majority in both chambers of Congress for two years now. So, tell me, are things better now than two years ago, or worse? How many promises did they fulfill?
Pull your head out of Obama’s backside, come up for some air, and once you get a little oxygen to your brain maybe you’ll be able to think a little more clearly.

Palin sounds like me ! It’s like having a Canadian run for the US Vice President. I can’t wait for Thursday and see how our Canadian sounding candidate does. I wish I could have asked her to go bear hunting with us in Alberta. Good luck.
ps Canadian’s on the East Coast sound stupid and uneducated. Thank God she doesn’t sound like them. New Yorkers also sound stupid.
10/1/2024 6:13 pm
I think you faggot liberals are funny. You will enjoy life when McCain/Palin are elected to the highest offices and run herd over those pukes mascarading as the peoples voices in Congress. That is where most of the problem lies. The rest is in Hollywood…
10/1/2024 6:15 pm
The modern democratic party is essentially a socialist entity. They are set to redistribute the nations wealth from hard working Americans to those that want something for nothing. Obama and Biden are socialists. Obama says paying more taxes is compassionate, Biden says its Patriotic…those two statements show both men to be unfit for any government office…unless they move to France.

“Poor people have been voting overwhelmingly for Democrats for over 50 years, and they’re still poor”.
Think about it people.
10/1/2024 6:25 pm
Oh, we get it! What I don’t get is how anyone who isn’t super rich would be a conservative - because the Republicans are only worried that THE RICH might get taxed… not the middle class… And are you people still harping on the welfare system? No one on our side of the fence is looking to INCREASE that…
By the way.. all you who make such statements about “redistribute the nations wealth from hard working Americans to those that want something for nothing”… I hope when your jobs get sent off to China due to outsourcing you tell your state ” Oh no! No unemployment for ME - that would be WRONG!!!!!!”
10/1/2024 6:25 pm
Thanks Hank and you are correct…the “sheep” don’t get it. Problem is, the sheep are multiplying much too quickly.
Guess what everyone? You have to work hard to acquire your dreams, stop asking hard working Americans to work hard for you…get out of the coffee shop, get an education or learn a trade/skill and go to work or start a business. Does that offend you? Do you realize it should not? Should start calling you comrade or get you a place ticket to Cuba?

Liberals are terrified of her because she strikes at the heart of their base-women and the working class. So that’s why they are out to destroy her. They will stop at nothing to achieve their socialist agenda, and dear old Sarah stands in their way like a MACK TRUCK! Got get them scumbags Sarah and tell the people what Obama really is-a Charlatan.
10/1/2024 6:34 pm
Mr Boston: Are you serious? Each working American pays into unemployment and when a job is lost the money they get is from the fund they payed into. Unemployment is not welfare.
In regard to your job and China: The U.S. government failed all of us in regard to outsourcing. The only advice I have for anyone is to obtain a skill that is difficult to outsource.
10/1/2024 6:35 pm
Smart as a Whip?

Mr. Boston. dude, people are people… it’s what is inside that makes the difference. He is playing to the yo -mama crowd..
10/1/2024 6:36 pm
Smart as a whip, huh?
Do you even know the difference between socialism and communism? Issues such as health care, pensions, and education are hardly bad things!
10/1/2024 6:37 pm

Can you tell me how they make those Pringles curl?
10/1/2024 6:39 pm
Becca where you at? I thawt we had sumpm goin there
10/1/2024 6:39 pm
Sad.. the same old lame conservative ideals… “The only advice I have for anyone is to obtain a skill that is difficult to outsource.” Manufacturing is gone, IT is halfway there, and engineering and R&D are on their way. Face it - to a greedy republican CEO they can ALWAYS have it done cheaper overseas!

Back to school for you imbeciles from the left. When you’ve written three books that have sold tens of thousands of copies (one a best seller I might add) and have two advanced degrees (not in bullsh** arts or sociology) come talk to me about smarts. Until then, keep your mouth shut about me.
10/1/2024 6:42 pm
Curious, You might try ask.com…or call Mr. Pringle… be careful though… I”ve heard he packs a potato gun
10/1/2024 6:43 pm
Wait… I thought Hank was the potato head?
10/1/2024 6:44 pm
Where did it ever say that the person running for Pres or VP has to be an Ivy Leaguer? Considering what’s going on in the world today, I’d much rather place my confidence in someone with good common sense rather than someone who may speak better or have no accent. I’m obviously a common person so big fancy college degrees mean nothing to me. I’m looking for someone to lead and make sound decisions based on the welfare of the US as a whole…much like a father does for a family. Grass roots people.
10/1/2024 6:47 pm
Well, actually, it’s a very interesting process. Pringles are initially flat, albeit wet. When they enter the curler they leave a belt and are picked up by rollers heated internally by superheated water. The heat almost instantaneously dries them in the shape of the roller, which is 4.11cm in diameter. They fall readily from the rollers onto an outfeed belt which routes them to the stacker assembly.
10/1/2024 6:48 pm
Mr Boston: No one thinks health care, a pension or an education are “bad”. What is not so good is when I am paying for your health care, your pension and your education. I worked my way through college (no loans and it took two years longer than it should have…big deal), I am saving money for my own retirement and pay for my own health insurance. I am not rich. I earn less than $100K and live in CA. My point is that people need to learn that if they want health insurance, a pension and an education it is up to them to earn those things, it is not the responsibility of the taxpayer to supply them. This, of course, does not apply to those with special needs. I would even agree that as a society we do need a safety net for those that fall on hard times due to illness or accident…there is room for compassion.

Mr Boston: I think you might consider using your passion to change the “rules” so that industry in America can reclaim itself. The opportunity to put thousands of Americans to work in the field of alternative energy is nearly endless and cannot be outsourced. Despite all her faults, America is still the land of opportunity for anyone with a dream.
10/1/2024 7:03 pm
In her interview with Katie Couric she was asked which magazines and newspapers she read and she responded by saying “All of them”. In another question she gave a paragraph long answer and when Katie Couric tried to press her further on the question she repeated the same answer word for word. I’m from Wisconsin by the way and few people have an accent that heavy here, not that accents should really matter. On the other hand I would hope that the Vice President of the United States would be able to communicate intelligently and coherently and Sarah Palin has yet to demonstrate that ability. On top of that she is a religious radical who attended advanced classes at her church which practiced faith healing and speaking in tongues. It will be a relief for me if she makes a fool out of herself in the debate(as she almost certainly will) and sabotages her chances of winning or forces McCain to put up someone else for the Vice Presidency. If she somehow became president(I heard somewhere that based on his age alone, health problems notwithstanding, McCain has a 1 in 5 chance of dying during his first term) she would be worse than Bush.
10/1/2024 7:13 pm
Arky, you are hilarious and I’m glad you spent your money on your laptop! Your opinion counts too!
10/1/2024 7:18 pm
Despite her faults she is still ridiculously inexperienced and an insult to intelligent, hard-working women everywhere. Sarah Palin II is as deluded as her predecessor (Sarah Palin the first) and wants to live in a world where naive beauty queens rule the world.
10/1/2024 7:24 pm
I wonder what Obama’s chances of dying are during his first term??? Did anyone ever do a study on that?
10/1/2024 7:27 pm
Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Barack Obama, Rev. Wright,
Joe Biden, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, etc. Why would anyone want to be like them? I wouldn’t vote for the muslim
candidate, Obama, for dogcatcher. He is a do nothing mouthpiece for a powerful underground movement. Careful, Careful.
10/1/2024 7:54 pm
I really could care less about one’s accent. Lingual bigotry is really no better than race bigotry. They are both forms of bigotry. Either way, to disqualify someone from being able to be a vice president because she sounds like Fargo is a shallow, and most likely, prejudicial remark.
I am casting my vote for the “presidential” candidate, not the VP. From my perspective, I believe that Palin is perfectly capable and whether she knows right now who is the second assistant to the assistant to the undersecretary for human affairs in Dubai is not important. That can all be learned, just as Barrack has learned more about things he was not familiar with during the past two years through OJT on the campaign trail.
If you look at Barracks early debates, he stumbled and looked a little foolish at first. As he learned from “practice” he then tuned his dog and pony show. But he still lacks the most important element of a great leader: he has no executive experience, nada, zilch, zero. So if Barrack can be taken seriously as a candidate for the presidency by anyone other than party blinded partisans, certainly we can extend the opportunity for a new comer to the national scene to tune up and get a little match toughness to her. Afterall, she is running as # 2 on the ticket and the REAL issue here is who is most qualified to be our next president.
10/1/2024 7:59 pm
Great reply, Flyfisher. I’m not the most articulate person but I now what’s what and I know that I will be very afraid if our country’s left in the hands of Barrack Obama. I also know that John McCain is not the answer to all our prayers…no one can ever fill those shoes…but he has my respect, I trust him and he has my vote, no matter who his running mate is.
10/1/2024 8:07 pm
Huh!?
10/1/2024 8:07 pm
Sarah Palin II wrote: “My point is that people need to learn that if they want health insurance, a pension and an education it is up to them to earn those things, it is not the responsibility of the taxpayer to supply them.”
My heartfelt Kudos to you Sarah!!! This is the most frustrating part of the liberal mindset to me. Envy taxation, which in truth is what fuels that rediculous “the top 3% blah blah” stuff is birdfood for the lazy.
I totally agree with you. If a person wants a retirement, then instead of blowing every cent you make, have the intelligence, be accountable for your own actions and take the steps to save, invest and build your own retirement. It is NOT my responsibility and it is not the governments responsibility to pay for your retirement, healthcare, kids music lessons, rent payments or any other expenses YOU accrue through your own decisions and actions. I worked my a - - off for 35 years to become successful financially. I took the risks, lost everything, had no assistance from the “sugar daddies” the hand out thinking types rely on, struggled, sacrificed and eventually created a wonderful success for myself and my family.
I chose to have children and because it was MY choice to do so, it was MY sole responsibility to support them and pay for their educations and daily needs. Now that I have achieved it, I should have to feel guilty? I should have to give it to others who did not give the effort I gave and did not make the sacrifice I made so they can have more? Bunk. If you want more out of life, do what it takes to get it for yourself and stop expecting others who worked much harder than you to pay your way. You sink or swim, it is your choice and I support you either way.
10/1/2024 8:15 pm
Lingual bigotry is really no better than race bigotry. Au contrare. Lingual bigotry is so much a better bigotry in that the levels of cultural intelligence, life experiences, and the ability to literally think quickly, of any hayseed speaker are almost simulateously observed/processed/categorized as uneducated/stored for comparatives/and saved for later hick jokes, by any metro New Yorker…….
10/1/2024 8:16 pm
As I said at the top of the thread, Richard, the post you made is catnip to the right wing. What’s happening here, obviously, is that you’ve been linked to by one or more of those idea-bogs.
Welcome to the big leagues of politics. You are the poster boy of the moment for left-wing elitism.
To reiterate what I said several days ago, before LGF or whoever noticed and linked to you:
“This is a subjective judgment of the sort that feeds into Republican identity politics. The GOP LOVES it when Democrats indicate that they have disdain for the way someone talks or behaves culturally. It’s worth tens of thousands of votes in the middle north and west of the country.”
The people commenting above are of course mostly just garden-variety knuckle-draggers, but they WILL be flogging this post of yours for a good couple of days.
We’ll see whether they give up after the debate or keep pushing the victim meme.
Incidentally, the enthusiasm of the commenters here should indicate why Palin will NOT be dropped from the ticket. People see themselves in her, and some of them are perfectly happy to imagine someone just like themselves being President.
The only good thing about that is that they have a point: almost any randomly chosen person with some level of psychological health would have done better than GWB did. Nowhere to go but up.
Bring on all the Cincinnati!! Still a cherished American value.

I beg to differ with you Anonymous. I do question Sarah Palin’s intelligence. If it looks stupid chances are it is.
10/1/2024 8:29 pm
This is very entertaining. I think we should do away with both the Democrat and Republican party…they have both become a pain in the lower anatomy of America. I thought Obama was an interesting choice at first, but the more he talks, the uneasier I become. I don’t know enough about Joe Biden yet, but I am researching him. John McCain was not my choice either, but our choices are pitifully limited. I actually prefer Sarah Palin to Hillary Clinton, I suspect that she is being underestimated based on her tendency to not answer irrelevant questions such as what magazines she reads. She frightens people because of her “past” religious upbringing, but them I can understand that, Sen. Obama makes me uncomfortable at times too. The reality is no matter what the outcome of the election, America will be the loser…neither party really has America’s best interest at heart..they and their members are out for power, fame and yes…fortune.

Seriosly though, Palin could prove to be quite competent, and her answer to Couric regarding newspapers was an obvious, to some, self defense reaction, in that she realized whatever hard answer she might give would only be used against her..Quite Savvy,

Slick Willy, that signed NAFTA and, the most favored trading nation, to China? By by US jobs…How quickly they forget that the democratic party left the hard working middle class a long long time ago, and is headed by special interest groups.

They’d rather cry “whoa is me”, and then stick their hand out for “the man” to fill.
Funny though, I bet every damn one of these people whining about jobs leaving the country probably have a Japanese car on the driveway, or a Korean TV in the living room, or both.
Probably buy their furniture at stores that have nothing but Chinese or Malaysian casegoods too.
Jobs matter to them when it’s THEIR job, but they don’t mind buying an imported product if they can save a nickel.

Funny how liberals talk about how open minded and tolerant they are of those different than them. But they are so quick to judge somebody’s intelligence by their accent, or their character by their choice of religion.
10/1/2024 9:31 pm
What a smart explanation, SE. I was wondering what the h*** was going on. It’s just craziness here.

I dont’ know who you people are. I have never read this blog and will seek to avoid it in the future. I could only stomach the first 20-30 replies. You have clearly demonstrated the problem with today’s political discussion. You hear an accent that’s not like yours and you use it to tag someone with the stupid label. And it works. Regardless of how “intelligent” her answers become in the future, she will never be heard because of the label. She will be denied teh opportunity to grow and improve.
You are snobs. Now shut up and listen for a change.
10/1/2024 9:54 pm
I’l bet she knows who was President in 1929 and when television came into use.
10/1/2024 10:06 pm
liberals are so quick to finger point, label and denigrate, just point out an error on a Democrat, and you will be labeled a mean spirited Republican. I would never speak about another person the way Liberals do, it is despicable. Talk about mean spirited! You act like spoiled children. And by the way rural people are not stupid because they don’t have a New York accent and live in “fly over country!”

Will you call Joey a liar for claiming that a helicopter he was riding in was “forced down by enemy fire”, a fact that even Johnny Kerry said is a lie?
You two faced morons ahve such limited intelligence that anything “R” scares you to death.
SP is a true breath of fresh air. Exactly what the founders dreamed of…….normal citizen serving, not carreer politicians who have nothing in common with any average American…..

“Hi Lauren and Roy”… I beg to differ.
To me, someone is “really stupid” if they tell someone else they are just because of a party affiliation…
Vote the issues, vote your conscience, vote for your kids future, regardless of what party affiliation the person you think has the answers is from.
You want to tell someone they’re less intelligent just because their chosen candidate’s affiliation is not in line with yours?
That is asinine.

Those from the northeast think the rest of us are a bunch of inbred dimwits because we do not speak the king’s english in as bootlicking a fashion as they do. But they also think the Kennnedy’s are royalty, which is something we do not have in this country. The press has been licking nobabma’s backside for a year. Why would we expect them to change now? It is the same elitist attitude that made them wonder why Trent Lott would wear jeans and a jean jacket to Bush’s ranch. Did they think he should show up at a ranch in a tuxedo?

You libs are scared stupid of Sarah, that’s why you attack her incessantly. You claim she’s unqualified for office, but did you forget to look at obama? It takes Millhouse 3 minutes to get out a sentence that any normal person could say within 20 seconds. Thursday night she’s going to mop the floor with lying biden. hope his hair plugs don’t fall out. That might make him look STUPID!

“Better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt…” was attributed to Mark Twain, not President Lincoln.
Every word Sarah Palin speaks removes all doubt of the fool. It is not her delivery, it is the message. She is completely and totally unqualified for high office. And to think she has a significant chance to become President should McCain die while in office? Shudder.
10/2/2024 12:35 am
SNL!!!
Stopped watching years ago when the internet became full of wrankled dwebs sprouting their virtures from dust mite infested keyboards thinking they are doing America good.
Much too funny reading all the dorky comments on all the forums (like this one) instead.

“Better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt…”
So what you are saying is Barrack ought to keep his mouth shut too?
10/2/2024 1:02 am
Get off it folks. Palin is simply an idiot. I am really amazed that she acquired a degree from any university. My children enunciated more grammatically beginning high school and their sentences contained more substance of communication that I have ever heard from Palin. On the other hand McCaine doesn’t seem very bright either. Republicans have this year presented the voters people with clearly the lowest common denominator of unqualified people yet. And to think I have always voted Republican. Well, not anymore. Voters once had a choice to elect an intelligent President, namely Adlie Stevenson, but instead put Eisenhower in the white house. Well anyone was an improvement over Truman and history speaks for itself. People in this country shall not receive, nor do they deserve, anyone better as President than an illiterate country girl from Podunk, Alaska. I think we all now McCaine will not survive eight years which means, guess what? To all you morons out there I hope you get exactly what you deserve. Buy a knife, skin a moose, defeat a criminal in office, and become President of the United States through the back door. Some legacy I must leave to my children and their children. Whatever happened to Alfred E. Newman for President?

Barack Obama dances around the issues so much in an interview that it’s difficult to discern WHAT he’s talking about. He always brings it back to the economy, not because that’s an important issue, but because he knows he can get away with not talking about everything else if he DOES talk about the economy. One of the reasons I was attracted to Sarah Palin in the first place is because she sounds different than other politicians. She doesn’t worry so much about how she talks and the way she says things, but about what she’s trying to say. She’s a true normal everyday American.
Do people say Barack Obama is dumb because he didn’t salute the flag during the national anthem? Or when he says kindergarteners need sex education at the tender age of 5? What kind of change are we talking about here?
Vote Oh Bomb Us Hussein, 2008, and just watch our country change.
10/2/2024 2:04 am
No one sounds any dumber than Hillary Clinton when she can’t say more than 3 words without and “ah” and she always says “gonna.” I have been very surprised that no one ever pointed it out to her, or mentioned it in the media. I would think someone of her background would learn to speak, and her peers should have poinjted it out to her, and if they did then she was the dumb one, for not attempting to correct her problems. I am thrilled that she is not the Presidential candidate, or VP runningmate. I will take Governor Palin any day. As a previous citizen of Alaska, I can vouch that she is indeed intelligent.
10/2/2024 2:06 am

Funny thing about communication skills. I have an IQ of 165 yet I write like a ten year old, I even forgot how to write entirely for years, use it or lose it I guess.
On the otherhand I’ve been asked on several occasions to do voiceovers and Narations for British films and music videos, because British ladies think my Appalachian accent is sexy.
Despite that border state drawl every english speaker who listens to those voice files can understand exactly what I’m saying, even if english is their third or fourth language.
When people begin to vote based on the candidate’s accent, you all all screwed. You’d end up with me as prez, and you’d really end up cursed to live in interesting times.
10/2/2024 10:04 am
What about Obama being so slick that one doe not believe a word he says? I thought it said alot when he made the anti-NAFTA speech, and, then, had his aides go through a back channel to tell Canadian officials “Don’t worry about it. He didn’t mean what he said”. Would you rather have someone in office who is plain spoken and straightforward, or a political chameleon and a liar?

Her accent? Oh, and Obama’s inner city speech is sooooo intriguing when he talks. He really isn’t giving a speech, he’s preaching as in an evangelical bible thumping preaching. That is really annoying. I’m a religious person but I don’t want preaching tones and inflections from a person who wants to be prez,. Maybe if she changed to eubonics she’d be better accepted by the media elites. Ya’ think???

Just skimming over all these posts, I’d like to make an observation. I am a Canadian without a Palin accent…we have every kind of accent here. What I have observed in these 165 plus posts is that the majority seem to support the Republican ticket. As a Canadian, may I remind you that the Republicans voted not once, but TWICE for George Bush and supported his headlong rush into the Iraq war, (which has pretty much internationally been considered a mistake) you have a major economic meltdown on his watch. Reading these posts, with the exception of a very few, are you surprised that the American public has no credibility anywhere in the world but you have the nerve to call anybody else stupid?
10/2/2024 4:39 pm
Impaulsen,
These posters are name calling because one) they can, because it is anonymous, and two) because when someone, like Richard did, suggests you can sound stupid because of your accent and that’s all it makes you feel powerless. Can’t do much about it. It’s like suggesting all blonds are bimbos, or all tall people play basketball. To cavalierly suggest that “Hey, you may not be stupid, but your accent sure sounds stupid.” I have to say, some name calling is to be expected. I think it was kinda funny. And I like Richard alot. But this whole thing is funny.
10/2/2024 6:24 pm
Sarah dumb and talks funny? Good luck in the debate, Joe Biden.
10/2/2024 7:51 pm
Point taken…Richard did say that. But he didn’t vote Republican in 2004 or in 2000. And he doesn’t support the Iraq war. And he doesn’t believe the Republicans is 2008. Based on what I’ve seen so far, and the Republican track record of the past 8 years, I wouldn’t either. Richard has also said that in spite of his failings, Obama seems like the real deal. And I might point out here that he and Dennis Kucynych were the only candidates of either party who opposed the Iraq war at the time. And both stood up and said so. Joe Biden, also with his share of faults, is not nearly as scary a prospect as a President as is Sarah Palin. Notwithstanding the fact that Obama’s chances of outliving McCain are pretty good. I guess I wasn’t clear on which party, the Republicans that is, shouldn’t be calling the other stupid.

There goes the neighborhood, huh, Rich?
Remember the golden days, when I was the lone Republican fighting the good fight but ultimately refusing to condone Palin - because she pushes low-rent bumper sticker politics, not because she sounds like a Coen Bros film (Burn After Reading, terrific btw). She’s also the reason I can’t vote for McCain now, my hero in his former incarnation, McCain 2000. Next time somebody doesn’t like my political take on this blog, just think, it could be much, much worse…
Most of these folks need to go back to playing in traffic. Holy hoard of Satan, Batman!

Impaulsen,
Could you maybe come up with some sort of boiler-plate language about how we’re not respected by the rest of the world, etc., and simply tack it on at the end of your posts? Then veterans of this blog could just read the first part, which I imagine would be relatively short. I don’t want to be mean, but “repititious” doesn’t begin to describe your contributions lately, they’re like little visits to an old folks home.

Point taken…Egret. I am old folks…and I’m weary of everything I see and hear these days. You get the feeling nobody’s listening so you repeat yourself. Definitely an old folks trait. Now they’re discussing how McCain should run a more negative campaign. And I will say that your Vice-Pesidential debate was infinitely more interesting and civilized than the fiasco that was our five party leader debate tonight. I don’t know any of those people. And I’m grouchy…our stock market dropped over 800 points again today and the pundits here feel your bail-out package may just be a band-aid solution. So I’ll do you a favour and say no more…I’ll leave you young folks to figure it out.

[…] More Palin Bashing — I don’t buy this, not at all. You simply cannot judge someone’s intelligence by their accent. Besides which, Palin very clearly is not stupid. Quite the opposite. She is intellectually incurious in the mold of Bush 43. She is willfully ignorant concerning matters which don’t align with her narrow worldview. She is self-consciously anti-intellectual. She is many bad things, some of them bearing quite serious consequences for the country should she succeed McCain in his inevitable decline. But don’t confuse any of that with stupidity. […]
