Meanwhile, in America

They’re stealing manhole covers for scrap in Philly…to protests, Starbucks is closing a store in Newark, New Jersey….food-stamp use is soaring in Massachusetts….
Around the country, the signs of this recession (regardless of what the administration says, let’s call a spade a spade) are manifest.
The silver lining? It’s good for Obama, who’s been having a good week on the foreign policy front even as he consistently seems more empathic than John McCain when it comes to economic suffering.

Maliki basically said “we want new people to work with”.
Afghanistan is hot because of the natural gas line; even the Russians wont mess with that. So it isnt oil its gas.
So the world out there is really changing and, as you have pointed out, the US is paying for that change with its infrastructure and safety net programs.
The press is mad because Obama is not talking with them overseas so he is in the “bad book” for now. But then again they want something new to write about. Conundrum?
One of the stories that should be written, but perhaps we cant discuss it, is the behaviour of the press over the last 8 years and how it allowed this to happen. Again, even the Iraqi govt said “Go home” and the press is pissed because Obama is talking with them and not the press corp. Can we say narcissistic?
So, as an able member of the fourth estate, what do you think should be done about this? Not poking a sharp stick in your eye- you have no trouble wading into deep waters and causing a stir. Love to hear what the press thinks the press should do at this point- you know along the lines of acting like grown-ups and all that.
Thanks
