Why $4 Gas is Good for America

I keep meaning to write a long-ish post on this subject, yet fail to get around to it. So instead, I’m simply going to take note from time to time of the positive things that are coming out of the way Americans are responding to the high price of gas.
For example: The Globe reports that the price of gas is leading to a surge in adults learning how to ride bikes…..

For all the good that comes out of it — more people exercising, not buying so much fattening food because they can’t afford it, etc. that you may uncover — the reality is that we still aren’t doing more things to really make a difference (e.g., investing in R&D to alternative energy sources) or make the inflating cost worth it, Cons still outweigh the pros.

The price of gas is already over $6.00 a US gallon up here in Canada…the bottom fell out of the truck and SUV market…I suppose that’s good unless you work for the plants that shut down here and the dealerships that are trying to unload them. Good, healthy organic or non-organic food is expensive which explains why so many poor people are obese, Anonymous…I wouldn’t call that a pro. I keep waiting for that old Yankee ingenuity to show up, but you’re right, it hasn’t so far. Or Congress to do something about speculation but nothing happens there either…I don’t think you’re hurting enough yet.

Re: the food issue, the poor unfortunately are always subjected to processed diets of Ramen noodles, mercury-tainted tuna, etc. However, maybe some will consider cutting cookies, cake and other junk food out of their diets to spend on more necessary and healthy options.
The country is going to need to hurt a lot more before anything really gets done. I think it may happen when gas hits $8 a gallon in the US. And believe me, it will.

I guess it all depends on whether you think your tank is half full or half empty…
