The Downside of Travel Abroad
Posted on January 22nd, 2008 in Uncategorized | 5 Comments »
Meanwhile, New York state attorney general Andrew Cuomo is investigating travel abroad programs at a number of schools, including Columbia and Harvard….
Questions about study abroad programs were raised in an article in The New York Times last summer that described how some program providers offer colleges rebates, free and subsidized travel, unpaid seats on advisory boards, help with back-office services, marketing stipends and other benefits. Critics say the arrangements, which are seldom disclosed, can limit studentsâ options and result in higher prices for those seeking international experience.
Hard to know how serious this is, but having Andrew Cuomoâone of the more ambitious and less pleasant men in New Yorkâinvestigate you isn’t going to be fun…..

in what ways have the study abroad options at Harvard been constrained by the outposts that Summers created overseas?
do those outposts have advisory boards? who sits on them and what interests do they represent? how do those conflict with the interests of the students?

Interesting that the Crimson has not addressed this topic…

The Crimson HAS covered the many problems with study abroad at Harvard consistently. So much so that one hopes A. Cuomo will not look into the Crimson’s archives for insight onto what goes on.

revamping study abroad was one of Larry’s legacies. Cuomo will have nothing but praise for all Harvard does in this area.

Kevin Zhou is awake at the helm. He has an article front and center in The Crimson on this probe.
