Congrats to Red Sox fans

You have now caught up to the Florida Marlins.
Seriously, the Sox were obviously great and deserved to win; the Rockies were clearly overmatched. I still question why anyone has to play anyone else other than the Yankees and the Sox, though. Would have been so much more interesting than this dreadfully dull World Series. Did the Rockies lead once?
The funny thing was that, even though they weren’t playing in the World Series, the Yankees still upstaged it; when Fox went to its reporter to break the news that A-Rod is going to opt out of his contract, you could feel the relief from Tim McCarver and Joe Buckâat last! Something interesting!Â
That Scott Boras is no dummy; he has a sense of dramatic timing.
Me, I’m not so sad about A-Rod. Yes, he had an amazing season. But he never really fit in in New York, and let’s be honest, he’s a complete head case. Check out those post-season stats, beginning with the 2004 ALCS: in four series, averages of .258, .133., .071, and .267. A whopping six RBIs in 20 games. Â
And then there was that infamous ball-slap against the Sox….his blond friend, which prompted the New York Post to dub him Stray Rod….his classy wife, who wore a t-shirt that declared “Fuck You” on the back to a Yankee game, where she happened to be sitting in front of a small child….his hanging out in illegal gambling clubs…..
Once before in his career, A-Rod chose the most money over the best situation, when he went to Texas. You’d think that he’d have learned from his mistake….
The question is really, Should the Red Sox sign him? He’d hit about 70 homers at Fenway. But would he be worth the trouble? And can you just go sign one of the most reviled Yankees?Â

ARod AND Torre to the Dodgers. You heard it here first. Well, and from the Post.

Sox resign Lowell.

A-Rod is bigtime money in the bank to the team that buys him, as long as he stays off Mitchell’s juice list, because he’s going to be the post-steroid era homerun poster boy. Butts in seats is what it’s about.

Anon 11:22am - is that prediction, wishful thinking, or reporting?

Fine, let A-Rod go to the Dodgers, where he can play in near-total anonymity.

YES!

ARod will play in “near-total anonymity” if he’s a Dodger?? The Dodgers only play in the second-largest media market in the country, have the highest attendance in the NL (second only to the Yankees in all of MLB!), and happen to be the celebrity capital of the world. And you think he’d be playing in near-total anonymity?? That’s the most shamelessly parochial thing I’ve heard in ages.

LAânot a big baseball town. Sorry!

LA, also not a big soccer town. But I don’t see Beckham playing in “near-total anonymity.”

Obviously Rich means a different kind of anonymity. That’s an overstatement, sure, but I agree somewhat. It’ll be only a little better than his Rangers era. Also more difficult to keep the national spotlight out west just because of the sports writing stronghold in the East. I’m sure it’s true, but it’s incredibly surprising that the Dodgers are second only to the Yanks in attendance. They have the Kirk Gibson homerun (talking LA Dodgers here), and it’s possible that’s really all they’ll ever have.

Well, there’s no NFL team in LA to compete with for primacy, for one thing. Some of that spills into USC, of course, and then there’s the Lakers/Clippers but they (a) play in a much smaller capacity venue and (b) aren’t very good these days. The Angels being competitive has spurred baseball enthusiasm generally. And in LA, the Dodgers count as an ancient and venerable institution. Also, beisbol is HUGE among Latino immigrants, of whom there are a considerable number in the area, as you might have heard.
Also, you ever been to Dodger Stadium? Great, great ballpark. And they’ve got some nice weather out there to complement it, you know?

Yes, it’s really warm, particularly around Malibu.
