Where the Blog Went

Sorry for being off yesterday, folks; I had to take a sudden business trip to Florida. (No, seriously.) Left for the airport at 6:45 AM, got back at 11 PM. On the plane home, in the row in front of me, a young woman had triplets, who screamed in baby harmony. Yikes.
Anyway, lots to discuss, soon….

Hope you know if Cornel is coming back to Harvard?

Cornel West? Coming back to Harvard? Good Lord! What comic relief that would provide. Methinks the big (at least in his own mind) fish would find the pond a bit bigger than when he left, and I’m not sure he has the moxie to swim with the younger fishes at this point.”
“Miles wide but an inch deep” indeed. If he’d expect a warm reception from his former ‘colleagues” he’d be sorely mistaken.

Above is all right and on target. Undergrads would love to have West back at Harvard, and it would be a PR coup. But, sadly, it would only contribute to African-American and African Studies looking like Skip’s little salon, rather than a serious intellectual endeavour (where is their graduate program?). Cornel has put Harvard in a no-win situation; congrats! Enjoy.

Anonymous 9:30 must be suggesting that Larry Summers succeeded in making FAS a “bigger pond” with “younger fishes” (I remember that tenuring younger faculty was an LHS aim). Sounds like an endorsement.
