A Reminder of Who We’re Dealing With

Two teenage boys, one 18 and one younger, have been executed in Iran because they allegedly had sex with each other. It’s big news all around the world…except here. Would it be too much for the White House to voice its displeasure?

Didn’t see it—it didn’t get a lot of play in US papers. A relative who’s gay sent me the photo.
I’ll bet a lot of people haven’t seen this, though….

Perhaps it is small, and I have questioned whether to mention it. But the title you choose for this post seems problematic. Who are ‘we’ and what is ‘dealing with’. You seem to be confusing Iraqis and Iranians. The Iraqis behind the insurgency and the Sadam Hussain regime, and also those who support al-Qaeda are almost all Sunnis, whereas Iran and the current government of Iraq are Shia. The collapsing of various people (say disaffected British muslims, a terrorist group, and the (somewhat democratically elected) government of a country)is a grave mistake made by many in their analysis of terrorism.
The government of Iran did a very evil thing in killing these boys, but I do not see how it is any more contected to the War in Iraq, the London bombings, or international terrorism than terrible things other governments do, e.g. the recent bloody repression of demonstraters in Uzbekistan, which has also recieved little coverage.

No, it’s a fair point, but I really meant “who we’re dealing with…in Iran,” with some carryover to hardline Muslims generally….
Any confusion about Iraq is my fault.
