A Conservative Turns on McCain

Posted on September 23rd, 2008 in Uncategorized | 1 Comment »

In this case, George Will, who wasn’t happy about John McCain’s declaration that he would fire SEC chairman Chris Cox.

McCain’s smear — that Cox “betrayed the public’s trust” — is a harbinger of a McCain presidency. For McCain, politics is always operatic, pitting people who agree with him against those who are “corrupt” or “betray the public’s trust,” two categories that seem to be exhaustive — there are no other people.

...It is arguable that, because of his inexperience, Obama is not ready for the presidency. It is arguable that McCain, because of his boiling moralism and bottomless reservoir of certitudes, is not suited to the presidency. Unreadiness can be corrected, although perhaps at great cost, by experience. Can a dismaying temperament be fixed?

Will puts this well: You can grow out of inexperience, but at 72, you’re not likely to grow out of temperament.

John McCain’s politics have grown so muddled and spur of the moment, it’s not surprising that conservatives such as Will are fed up with him. Take away Sarah Palin, and would any conservatives vote for him?

Or: Why rock music—and drumming—is fun.

This is Feeder, one of my favorites of recent years, sadly unappreciated in the States.

“Of Course We Had Sex”

Posted on September 22nd, 2008 in Uncategorized | 3 Comments »

Is that Cindy McCain after a few dozen too many painkillers? Nope. It’s the Brazilian former model with whom John McCain had an eight-day sexfest back in 1957.

Brazilian paper O Globo found the woman, Maria Gracinda, who is mentioned anonymously in McCain’s book, Faith of My Fathers.

Asked about John in bed, Gracinda says, “Of course we had sex…he was not only good at kissing but good at everything.”

Good at everything! Ah, youth.

Couple things. This is surely not scandalous, it’s just human. If, that is, you’re a Democrat, and you believe that sex between consenting adults is a basically good and enjoyable and healthy thing. If you’re a Christian conservative, like Sarah Palin-probably not so admirable.

Second, McCain really has a type, doesn’t he?

The Race is about Race

I estimated last week that Obama was losing 5-10 % of the popular vote because of racism.

Now a new poll conducted by AP/Yahoo/Stanford comes up with a more specific number: 6%.

If it weren’t for prejudice, this election would be a blow-out…..

Reign of the Tutors

Posted on September 22nd, 2008 in Uncategorized | 4 Comments »

The New York Sun reports that Ivy League grads are getting paid $100 an hour to tutor rich kids in New York City.

I’ve had days where I made over $1,000,” [Harvard grad Evan] Hepler-Smith said.

A junior at the University of Rochester who grew up on the Upper East Side, Beth Rosner, said she paid her SAT tutor $400 for each hour-and-a-half session when she was a senior at a private Manhattan high school.

Ms. Rosner also spent $2,000 on a private essay-writing coach, who was a Harvard graduate and a playwright living in New York. The majority of her classmates at the Ramaz School paid for private tutors as well, she said.

So Harvard alums are using their great skills…to help wealthy children get into Harvard.

Perhaps current events will put an end to this.

Now, That’s Embarrassing

The front page of my copy of today’s Times (yes, I still get the print edition) carries the photo below.

The caption?

Jeremy Piven, left, of HBO’s ‘Entourage’ was among the winners at the Emmy Awards.”

The picture, of course, is of 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin.

Probably they’re just trying to mess with Baldwin’s head and see what will happen…..

Return of the First Dud

Posted on September 22nd, 2008 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

About a week ago, I commented that the MSM should investigate the role of Todd Palin.

Or, as his wife refers to him, “Alaska’s first dude.”

The Washington Post has done the piece, and it’s creepily fascinating.

…to a degree that has surprised many state government observers, Todd Palin also has become involved in policy, sitting in on his wife’s meetings, traveling on state business and weighing in on some legislative issues.

John Harris, the Republican speaker of the Alaska House, said he had never been called by the spouse of a governor before the two calls he got from Todd Palin. One was to argue for moving the state capital to Anchorage. The other was to ask Harris to “keep an eye” on a key aide who had an affair with the wife of one of Todd’s best friends.

Voting records show that for eight years Palin was a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, which wants Alaska to secede from the United States. (I”m starting to agree with them.) He left the party only in 2002.

One wonders what role Todd Palin would assume in a McCain White House…..
