Ortiz: He’s a Liar Too

The Boston Globe reports that David Ortiz’s claim that he was “blindsided” by the news that he was on a 2003 list of baseball players who tested positive for steroids is a lie—the players’ union informed Ortiz and everyone else on the list years ago.
[Both Ortiz and former teammate Manny Ramirez], along with more than 100 others who tested positive, were notified years ago by the players union that they were on a list of players seized by federal authorities along with the test results, according to a landmark report on doping in the sport and testimony by the union chief.
As I’ve written before, Ortiz has in fact been preparing for this revelation for years, with vaguely worded suggestions that the Dominican Republic is the wild west of steroids which could be slipped into your drink like a roofie at any moment.
Except that Ortiz has also taken a hard line against steroid use in other quotes, suggesting that users be banned for at least a season.
How these things can be reconciled, I’m not sure.
The thing I’d like to know about Ortiz is, when was he last tested? Because his production now seems excessive….

Did you actually read the article carefully, RB? Did you maybe note this part: “MLBPA executive director Donald Fehr told House committee chairman Henry Waxman in a letter last summer that the players were not explicitly informed that they had tested positive, but only that they were on a list of players the government had seized, as part of an investigation into an illegal steroids operation.
In other words, no, Ortiz was never told he tested positive. Look, the MLBPA has been a total clown show about this issue, and it’s entirely plausible that they screwed this up so badly that the players actually misunderstood the situation.

Now, TODAY’s Globe story, which involves Ortiz’s personal assistant, makes it much more likely he’s a big liar: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2009/08/02/sox_fired_two_in_steroids_case/
Sad.
