Black Celebration

Seeing as it’s Palm Sunday…a perfect time to post a new, in-studio video from Depeche Mode. The song’s called “Come Back.”
Simple, heartfelt, lovely. Is there a better songwriter in pop music than Martin Gore?
Nope.
The album, :Sounds of the Universe, is out two weeks from Tuesday. Thank God.

Big DM fan here, too. I love the songs on which Martin Gore also sings lead vocals, Any Second Now, Everything Counts, Things you Said, I Want You Now, Route 66. . . But what the video really brings out is how well the two voices blend together.
First London concert already sold out.

You clearly know your vintage DM, Beecham! It’s true, Gore has a really nice voice, and he and Gahan sing well together. Also terrific are the songs on which Gore alone sings lead vocals—the classic Home, for example…..

Sounds like a mashup between Coldplay and The Cure. I mean that in a nice way.

Well, of course DM are contemporaries of the Cure, but they long predate Coldplay.

I confess, yes, DM was (and is!) a bit of a soft spot of mine. Home is great. It’s always amazed me that a songwiter who is such an effective singer could hand over the lead so easily to someone else. Heck, I can’t even listen without singing along! (perfect that they sing in my range, though songs like Never Let Me Down do seem to take on different meanings with a female vocalist . . .)
