Mea Culpa

It’s been pointed out to me that I erred on one point in my Boston Magazine article on Larry Summers’ resignation. About two-thirds of the way through the article, I wrote that Peter Ellison had been appointed dean of the graduate school by Summers.
That’s not trueâit was Neil Rudenstine who appointed Ellison dean.
Not a central point of the article, but still, one hates to make any mistake, and I’m happy to correct it.

Actually Richard, GSAS Deans are appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Although GSAS does have university-wide responsibilities for growing numbers of PhD programs joint between FAS and other Schools, especially the Medical School, GSAS remains in a principal reporting relationship to to the FAS Dean — and, in fact, that relationship was one of the issues in contention last spring. I believe it was FAS Dean Jeremy Knowles who appointed Peter Ellison — just as FAS Dean Bill Kirby was the one who appointed me last spring. No doubt, the Harvard President at any given time needs to find such an appointment acceptable, but it is in fact the FAS Dean’s call.
Theda Skocpol, [current] Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
