Thanks to all who contributed to the conversation below, more than doubling the previous record for comments posted regarding an item on this blog. I'm not quite sure what came out of it...but somehow, I feel that we haven't heard the last of the issues you all raised and debated over the weekend.

And I am struck again by the question: What does it say about the greatest university in the world that there is no public forum where this kind of discussion can take place other than a single blog?

In the interest of evenhandedness, as you say, Richard, it's worth noting how beautifully sunny the weather was this weekend, perhaps even in Italy, and that even so, your loyal readers chose to stay indoors and post their comments. That's either a profoundly powerful or pathetic turn of events.

A little investigative journalism would seem to be in order, if not you Richard, then the Crimson. At a minimum, a reporter could find out how the Broad gift was presented to the Harvard community and the reality of the money consequences. Other gifts may need investigating too but someone could start with Broad.

depends upon where you live (regarding the weather) now doesnt it...

The long string of comments does suggest that integrity may have been an issue in the Larry Summers affair.

Betty Trachtenberg has made Yale look foolish, in the way that small-town librarians and school administrators who ban books look foolish. As an alum, I'm embarrassed --
