  At Harvard, Chick Lit
Here's a funny media story.

This morning the Times runs a piece about whether Harvard will choose a woman for its next president. Then Matt Drudge links to it. Then the New York Sun runs a piece saying, "Harvard could be preparing to select a woman as its new president, according to a post on www.drudgereport.com."

According to a post on www.drudgereport.com? Hmmm...seems to me you should credit the newspaper which actually ran the story, not the website that happened to link to it.

In any case, now suddenly you have a media mini-blitz about Harvard choosing a female president. Even the Crimson gets into it, with this story: Woman to Take the Lead?

Now, about the Times piece, by Alan Finder. It contains absolutely no news. It reports on the Crimson's disclosure of the list of 30. It says that maybe an insider will be chosen. It says that some freshmen care, some don't.

And it contains provocative quotes like this one:
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the new president is a woman,” Dr. Maguire added. “It’s just time. There are lots of good women around.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Giants lost to the Eagles in the last second of the game. Or if the sun came up tomorrow. Some things, you're just willing to go out on a limb about.

This isn't to take too much of a shot at Alan Finder; the article's a perfectly good one for anyone who hasn't been paying attention to the Harvard search, which is most of the world. Still, one wishes that he did advance the ball just a little.

It is also slightly weird that the paper publishes photos of the two women, Ruth Simmons and Amy Gutmann, who have most decisively removed themselves from consideration. How about Drew Faust, Elena Kagan, or Alison Richard? Nowhere to be seen.

And the Times wonders why its audience is slipping.....

Comments:
Mostly fair commentary, but two points: One, I can't imagine the Crimson ordered up "Woman to Take the Lead?" after Drudge or the Times. The timing is probably a coincidence, so the Times hasn't really caused any mini-blitz. The Sun thing is hilarious, though. And two, the Times' audience is not slipping, just its revenues. If you count online readers, which you should, then the paper's readership is increasing every quarter.

can someone tell me just how many people read the NY Sun, and whether it's likely to last?

in truth, the discussions about that topic on this blog have been significantly more informative.

Could those journalists writing in the Times or Sun just be reading this blog? they should at least credit their sources, as the Crimson has done at times when using information from this blog.

Anon 11.32, yes you have a point. Just look 3 entries below this one and you will find a discussion of the Woman President issue.

But this blog is for the cognoscenti. It is entirely possible that those working for the Times or the Sun don't know about it.

I understand Harvard is now considering Tiki Barber for the job, but only if he cross-dresses.

Okay, the Sun thing is pretty clear. They have a three-year old profile of Kagan and wanted to use the occassion to bring it out again.

Finder, like his counter-part Daniel Golden at the Journal, has been pretty much asleep at the wheel when it comes to this story.

Harvard will have a new president selected within a month. Whither the lead education reporters at our nation's leading papers?

The Crimson story seems like something that was in the works for a while. Judging by its length, they wouldn't have been able to pull it together over night as a reponse to Druge or the Times or anything of that sort.

Agreed about the Crimson.

Surely a woman would be the worst approach for the school to take at this point, as it would pander to a situation already overly politicized and bring on media storm of unheard of dimension. Just think of the pressure she'd be under, having been chosen largely to send a message and coming after the semi-disastrous reign of L Summers. What if she failed? Right idea, wrong time.

"Whither the lead education reporters at our nation's leading papers?"

Probably doing something more important than idly speculating on the next president of Harvard.

Here's a question: how many of the potential candidates are Jewish?

Oh, fyi, I think the Times and the Sun people do know about this blog. After all, in his article Finder talks about bloggers commenting on the infamous Amy Gutmann photo, and I don't know of that many bloggers other than yours truly who wrote about that.

Two other things: I think education reporters are stretched pretty thin. Who the president of Harvard will be is a perfectly legit topic for them, but my sense is that there's one or two education reporters at the Times for the entire country.

Also, why does the commenter above want to know how many of the presidential candidates are Jewish?

Dude, Finder may very well read your blog, but a TON of blogs wrote about the Gutmann thing:

http://technorati.com/search/amy+gutmann+suicide+bomber

Wow! You're not kidding. Who knew?

Dude, what do you have against jews and women?

why do you keep asking this question about jews and women? The President will be selected on their merits, because they have demonstrated skill in addressing the challenges Harvard is facing.

If you have those qualities you may be selected. If others are stronger candidates, your or their gender or religion will play no role in the selection.

Last two posters: I didn't post the original comment, but seriously, it's just trivia. Jews are into that.

well, when the jews and women (and blacks and asians too) stop demanding compensation for all the past wrongs they believe they have suffered then we, the proud, the few, the marines, will stop ragging on them, k dude?

my vote: malcom gladwell for president (maybe he'll shut up then and let someone else make some money)

I think Richard wrote that last anonymous comment.
