I got teased in front of the whole class in sixth grade for insisting that Galapagos was pronounced Ga-la-PA-gos (i.e., hard "a") instead of Ga-LA-pa-gos. This trauma is with me today.

I am sorry to hear that. I had the same problem once when I pronounced "picturesque" picture-skew. Fortunately the teacher didn't hear me, and judging from the class' laughter, I knew I got it wrong, so I was quickly able to correct myself. Either way, I think it's time to let go of the trauma.
