  More Lies from James Frey
Did James Frey's lover Lilly really commit suicide, as he describes in his sham-book, "A Million Little Pieces"?

Stephen Levitt, writing on his Freakonomics website, doesn't think so....

I don't really have the time to check out any of Frey's claims myself, and I don't feel the need to; to my mind, what's already been disproved about the book undermines its veracity so fundamentally that there's no need to continue.

But I will go on record as venturing that the book contains far more lies than facts. If Frey lied about things like his criminal record—things that could be checked out—why wouldn't he lie about things that would be virtually impossible to check?

Answer: Of course he would, and surely did.....

Because of my unfortunate experience with fabulist Stephen Glass, I keep thinking about why Glass was drummed out of journalism and Frey's book continues to sell by the barrelful.

What's the difference between them? Morally, none. But Frey has at least two powerful institutions with a self-interest in propping him up—Random House and Oprah—not to mention all those self-deluding readers who feel that Frey helped them "get back on their feet," or some such self-help claptrap.....

Thanks for the thought, and consider it done.

Why the vendetta when clearly the book has given
so many hope and inspiration ? And didn't Mr.Frey
attempt to publish this as fiction first(with zippo
interest?)

No vendetta, just an argument. Why? Because I do not think "hope and inspiration" based on lies is meaningful. Because there are plenty of books that can inspire that happen to be truthful. Because I think honesty in our culture is important, and I find the blatant attempt to rationalize dishonesty bizarre and sad.

Truth is important...and if we think it's okay for James Frey to lie, because we believe he meant well, where does the line stop? Why isn't it okay for President Bush to lie as long as he meant well?

I can appreciate the dogma, but where's the context? WMD vs. 3 days', 3 weeks', 3 months
in jail? Seems a bit pretentious.

Not sure I'd call what I wrote "dogma," but I take your point. I guess the context is that I see these things on a line of continuity; they are connected, and when we rationalize and excuse deliberate dishonesty in one arena, it blurs the lines in all of them. The points of connection are certainly there. Frey rewrites history about his experience; Bush rewrites it regarding the motivation for the war in Iraq. Both are examples of a cultural corruption that festers.

Don't get me wrong; I don't want Frey to burn at the stake or anything so dramatic. But I still don't think he's taking responsibility for or being honest about what he did. And in that regard, I think he's a terrible example for people with drug and alcohol problems.

Point taken. But what REAL difference will a "REAL" apology make?

Dunno. But I think it's a starting point. Maybe it would show that we are all human, and we all make mistakes, and what brings us honor is not perfection, but the courage and honesty with which we confront the mistakes that we have made.

i think a REAL apology is deserved to anyone the book touched, now falsely. i think a REAL apology is deserved for anyone who paid $$ for this book.

i'm all for a deeply compelling read--not that i have read this book, i haven't--but this kind of trickery on subjects so serious shouldn't be taken lightly. at least i don't think so...

and today oprah announced her latest book, elie weisel's memoir... would be hard to try disprove. (unless you're mel gibson's dad...)
