  An Important Reminder
A truck bomb has killed some 27 people in Baghdad, many of whom were children; American soldiers were handing out candy to kids in the neighborhood.

While we can and should criticize the Bush administration for much about the way it has sold and conducted this war, acts like this remind us that, if our president is not completely good, our enemy is completely evil.

How in Allah's name could anyone blow up children?

Comments:
My question is whether it is appropriate for american soldiers to be distributing toys and candies to children. Surely this is a propoganda move, quite outside the scope of the army's duty, which would be better performed by another organization, and which as we have seen, needlessly endangers children.

Maybe. And maybe it's too dangerous to keep doing that kind of thing. But that seems a less important point than the fact that there are people who would kill kids.

Actually, it seems that the Army acknowledges that handing out candy would be a mistake. Which is to say, on the front page of today's Chicago Tribune is a denial from an Army spokesman that the soldiers were handing out candy, coupled with a report that some of the killed children were found still holding blue candy wrappers. The Tribune being the Tribune, no clarification was asked for.

Hilarious about the Tribune. And yeah, I noticed in today's Times that the Army says the handing out of candy was a spontaneous thing. Very sad that this is something one has to apologize for.
