  No, He Didn't
A new book claims that John Kennedy, my old boss, slept with Princess Diana in a New York hotel room.

I'm hardly an expert on John's sex life, and it's not something I wrote about in my own book, American Son.

But about this particular innuendo, trust me—it just ain't so. It's just the kind of thing that people say about people who aren't around any longer to defend themselves. And in this case, it's a kind of celebrity sex fantasy. Because their lives seemed similar in various surreal elements...and they certainly would have made an attractive couple, wouldn't they?

Comments:
You have absolutely no idea if this claim by Diana's friend and confidante is true. You certainly like to think you know everything, don' you?! Why would your boss tell you who he was sleeping with?!
If he was any sort of grown-up it's very likely he would not be kissing and telling. You are not an authority on John Kennedy, Jr. -- as your book makes very clear. The woman who writes that they had a romp on a hotel room, she is being referred to as a "confidante"... Why don't you take it up with her?
The two of you likely have a lot in common. Making money off those who can no longer speak for themselves. You have some nerve asserting yourself as being the bigger person here. You did to Mr. Kennedy what she is doing to Diana. Maybe you're just jealous she actually has something of interest to say!

Oh, come on. This is just silly. You can do better than that. Have you even read American Son?

There's a simple truth here. No one ever said you shouldn't speak of the dead. Quite the contrary: If you don't remember the dead, you dishonor them.

The adage is, don't speak ill of the dead. When you remember someone—especially someone you respect and care about—you want to say nice things about that person. I did that, and it was an easy thing to do, because they were true. Read the book and see for yourself.

Tell you what: If you read the book and you still think that it is unflattering to John, send me the receipt and the book, and I'll pay you for the postage and the price of the book. At least that way you'd know what you're talking about.

A question for Mr. Bradley:

Did John Kennedy ever discuss with your who he slept with?
I am not saying this story has any truth to it, but it just seems really odd that you would assume the responsibility of denying this on his behalf. Shouldn't that be something a member of his family takes on?

To Anonymous #2—

It's a fair question. Let me put it this way, because I'm reluctant to go beyond what I wrote in American Son, when I was really thinking hard about what was appropriate to say about John and what was not.

This alleged tryst between John and Diana was first reported in the New York Post, I think. (This was back in 1995 or 1996.) Diana was visiting New York, and the original story had it that John had gone to her hotel room for a lunchtime encounter.

The story caused some mirth within our office, because during the lunch hour in question, John had been in the office. I remember John himself chuckling about it.

Absolute proof that it didn't happen? No. But when you work for a famous person for a long time, you do get some sense of what's plausible and what's just nonsense, and the report about Diana and John feels concocted.

Oh, another thing re Anonymous #2: The Kennedys don't like to respond to this kind of stuff, because if they did, it'd be a full-time job. And they worry that by responding, they'd actually encourage it.

But yes, sure, they would be better authorities than I am. I would never claim otherwise.
