The iPad Arrives

And Walt Mossberg loves it:
I believe this beautiful new touch-screen device from Apple has the potential to change portable computing profoundly, and to challenge the primacy of the laptop. It could even help, eventually, to propel the finger-driven, multitouch user interface ahead of the mouse-driven interface that has prevailed for decades.
I think you can kiss the Kindle goodbye….
On the other hand, the Washington Post’s reviewer is more muted, and says the iPad is too heavy for prolonged e-book reading.

And I haven’t even figured out how to run my MacBook and my cell phone yet. Don’t need to. I can do everything I need or have time to do. They do all this extra stuff that just annoys me and makes me paranoid. Inanimate objects around the house like vacuum cleaners and garden hoses that I think should know better have a tough enough time surviving at my house. The Kindle would have gone flying out into the backyard (eventually to be re-cycled, of course…I’m as green as I can be). For me there will never be a substitute for a book or a newspaper so there is no point in discussing it further. A book is the reason why I’m still reading this blog. If it weren’t for “American Son”, I wouldn’t be here at all.

After this thing “propels the finger-driven, multi-touch user interface”, will we still need to read Joy of Sex?

More than ever, MDV, more than ever. Coming home from the bank today though was just about as good. It’s great when you can come out of your bank feeling like you’ve just won a small lottery..the very best kind. It’s what happens when you look after your bank and your bank looks after you. Even better when your financial consultant tells you she scheduled you first thing in the morning because she knows when she’s done, you make her feel good all day, just before a long weekend. We hugged and it didn’t do a damn thing for me except bring a tear to my eye but know I have a friend.
By the way, I checked out the latest reviews of “American Son.” I wanted to remember why I’m still following his work. It’s interesting how after all these years since that book was written, they figured out Richard wasn’t the worst person in the world after all. I could have told them that in the first place, just from reading the book I can’t remember how many years ago.
