The Sox: Will They Lose?

Let us hope so. Tonight Boston begins its playoff run in a series against the hilariously-named Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Will they lose? There’s a good shot. Ace Josh Beckett is hurt, and so is third baseman Mike Lowell. True, the Sox usually seem to have the Angels’ number. But this could be the LAAoA’s year. (They did win the most games of any team in baseball. Then again, they play in baseball’s worst division.)
I haven’t written much about baseball lately because of being vaguely depressed about the Yankees and because there’s a lot I want to say but haven’t had the time.
Quick thoughts:
—terrific that Mike Mussina won his 20th.
—terrific that the Yanks took two out of three at Fenway.
—unbelievably terrific that the Mets choked again and blew their season on its final day.
—very mixed feelings about the new Yankee Stadium.

Obviously, the big issue is Dodgers (with Torre) are in. Does it now appear Hank was a bit,um, hasty in firing Torre? Thoughts?

I don’t think so, TT. If you look at the standings— http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/ — the Dodgers have just 84 wins and a winning percentage of .519. Good for 5th in the AL East. And even then they had to be saved by Manny Ramirez.
Plus, look at the Yankee bullpen, which was stellar this year, due largely to the way Girardi rationed his pitchers. Torre would picked one guy and used him until he was completely ruined.
I don’t think any manager could have won with the combination of aging talent and injuries that the Yankees suffered from this year.

Funny you should mention it and I’m going to have to do some research and find out about this. Why exactly, was a new Yankee Stadium necessary. This wasn’t just any old stadium…this was the House that Ruth Built. If they renovated Fenway Park which has its own unique history and the renovated Wrigley Field, why was it necessary to scrap and totally rebuild a stadium that has more history than any stadium in the United States. Maybe there’s good reason…am assuming there must have been very good reason to do something so somehow insensitive to me.
