Let the Little Lady Speak

Sarah Palin is running for vice-president, meaning she could possibly be president, and few in the country know much about her. But the men in the McCain campaign aren’t letting Palin give any interviews.
“Why would we want to throw Sarah Palin into a cycle of piranhas called the news media that have nothing better to ask questions about than her personal life and her children?” [McCain campaign manager Rick] Davis said. “So until at which point in time we feel like the news media is going to treat her with some level of respect and deference, I think it would be foolhardy to put her out into that kind of environment.”
If the McCain campaign had a kitchen, they’d put Palin in it and shut the door.
And another thought: You can not promote your v-p candidate as a “hockey mom” and in the next breath say that her personal life is irrelevant.

But I had several dreams last night that she was irretrievably caught up in a scandal involving someone’s murder. It was so real, I almost expected to turn on the radio and hear that she was withdrawing from the race. Instead, I hear about my least favorite couple, Freddie and Fannie.

Don’t know what you’re complaining about. She’s agreed to be interviewed by Bill Cunningham next Sunday night. (And Charlie Gibson, to be fair.)
The demonization of the media — and the decision to stiff them, even those as unchallenging as Larry King — is of a piece with the anti-intellectualism we discussed earlier, a fear of freedom of ideas and freedom of thought.

Thus it appears a “cycle of piranhas” is more vicious than a pit bull with lipstick!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the questions surrounding Sarah Palin, and although I was as nit-picking as anyone in the immediate aftermath of McCain’s announcement of Palin as his running mate, I’ve come to believe that the best way to go is to keep the big issues clearly in focus and not to worry too much about the smaller ones. The fact is that she is anti-choice, anti-environmentalist, and pro-creationist. Some people agree with these positions, and others (including myself) do not. We will, of course, also have to see what happens with the investigation into her role in the matter of her soon-to-be-ex brother-in-law. Unlike other questions about her family, that one raises ethical issues about her conduct as governor. All these are substantial matters that have a direct bearing on what we may expect if McCain is elected president. We will also have to see how McCain and Palin deal with questions on the economy.
Harry Lewis’s point about anti-intellectualism is well taken. Palin’s credentials on this front are tarnished by, among other things, her attempt to ban certain books from the library in Wasilla. Let’s keep these big issues in the forefront.

I was a hockey mom many years ago…supportive but no pit bull. Today, I live in hockey country, in a traditional hockey city with hockey played at every level. It’s interesting that in actuality, we have a problem with “pit bull” hockey moms and dads. Aggressive and ambitious parents want their kids to be in the NHL and that’s what they push them to do. Minor hockey in the community campaigns against these parents all the time. It’s not wise to admit to being one. Maybe in Alaska it’s okay. And it sounds good in politics. It’s also apparently okay to save “taxpayers” money who don’t pay either sales tax or state income tax and are heavily subsidized by the rest of America and “big oil”. It’s apparently also okay to say you put the governor’s plane on e-bay and then neglect to say it didn’t sell there but later privately at a bit of a loss…no question that would ruin the punch line. And it’s okay to leave out that you took the federal money, even if you didn’t build “the bridge to nowhere” with it. Not exactly lying but not honest enough for me. And I agree, there are plenty of big issues in the forefront without dragging the family into it. But other than thate, I believe Obama and Biden should not hold back…she is no lady. And the thought that she would be a heart beat away (maybe half a heart beat) from the presidency is a truly terrifying thought.
