If I Were a Reporter for the Crimson...
...I might start looking into the activities of Harvard Medical International, which describes itself as "a self-supporting not-for-profit subsidiary of Harvard Medical School."

What exactly is this group, which launches Harvard-branded hospitals in foreign countries, and why does it get to use the Harvard name? What were the terms of its arrangement with the Harvard Medical School, and who oversees it? What, in this context, does "not for profit" mean?

Word has it that a certain high-ranking University official has also been asking such questions.....

Comments:
It is called a cartel.

Check out the venture capital/private equity fund (from the pension funds) used to promote med products and pharma.

I believe its primary mission is professional education of medical professionals in under-developed nations (could be wrong). Aligns with the HMS mission from an international perspective, what's so strange about that?

For that name to have been approved, you can be sure there's plenty of quality control written into their agreements.

It's unclear what is the issue that you see with this Harvard-affiliate. Why should the reporter of the Crimson be more concerned with this than with the severe drop in the number of applications in some professional schools?

I get it, there's been a drop in applications at one of the professional schools.
Austin Powers

Yeah, 7:25, I remember all the quality control in the Harvard (Andrei Shleifer) economics mission to Russia....

And the billions that were paid to settle that claim. There's somethign truly weird about the way (1) Harvard has so much money it has to give it away to middle income parents and (2) FAS still claims that it's in debt and doesn't have the funding to fill various vacancies. Can anyone clear up this mystery?

Richard,

Did you know that a decision about HMI was recently made by Mass Hall and that a public announcement is expected next week?

If you did have this knowledge it would appear that you are trying to use The Crimson to do a PR job for Mass Hall, who could then make the announcement giving the appearance of responding to student interest.

If you did not have this prior knowledge, and are writing this prompted by a tip, it would appear that someone with internal knowledge of the decision already made a bout this issue is trying to use you to do a little of PR work for Mass Hall.

If it's none of the above, well, this is just a remarkable coincidence.

Read the papers next week on this topic.

No Goldfinger --aka Austin Danger Powers--not a drop, but a steady and severe drop over the last several years. This drop and dramatic faculty discontent as reflected in the survey results Evelyn refuses to make public. And also a sharp decline in the position of the school in question in the rankings in the US News and World report.

So please tell us Mike Myers. Is all the bruhaha over HMI just a ploy to focus attention away from the declinining quality of graduate education at Harvard?

Faculty discontent? make that staff discontent as well.

that is very interesting information 7.32pm. I do not think Richard would, knowingly try to 'use' undergraduates for something like this. It does appear, however, that someone 'used' Richard by mailing him a bogus tip.

Richard could simply post the tip in it's entirety IF and WHEN the press reports that Harvard has made a decision regarding HMI.

While it is not objectionable for someone to try to use Richard to help Mass Hall look good, it is very wrong to try to manipulate undergraduates for these endeavors.

The Crimson kids don't fall for these stratagemes. They learned much about grown ups trying to use them during the tenure of another President.

Their attention will not focus on HMI, and it will not focus on graduate education either. Instead, they are pretty interested in this:

N.Y. Attorney General Launches Investigation of Harvard Study Abroad Program

Whoever keeps posting about graduate education should either name the school and quote some numbers, or keep quiet.

Agree 9.17. Slight drops in applications are to be expected in this economy. What is needed is more financial aid, more time and some quiet. In the words of the wisest man:

"I like your silence; it the more shows off your wonder"
Win Tale, Act v, Sc.2

"When sorrows come, they come not single spies, but in battalions". -(Hamlet. Act IV, Scene V).

Richard, do you care to explain what prompted your interest in Harvard Medical International?

Not really, no.

Richard likely got a tip, and is likely being used... which he probably doesn't mind considering the quid pro quo relationships he enjoys with any number of sources he has, a good number of which are likely within FAS...

... which is nothing new really.

Probably so. Richard is a grown up, so he probably can read those tips with a grain of salt. Because the young reporters in The Crimson may be more trusting it is not appropriate for Richard to entice them to go after a story only to smooth the way for the announcement that will be made by Harvard about this issue very soon.

Richard understands that when he gets a tip like this it may be a way to create a distraction over a much more significant story that those who provided him the tip DON'T want him to focus on. But to take part in confusing The Crimson verges on deceit.

sorry Richard, it looks as if someone did use you this time. Careful with that same source in the future.
