  Harvard is to Hogwarts As....
So J.K. Rowling will be this year's commencement speaker at Harvard. Interesting! I don't decry it, because, let's face it, Rowling has changed the world, and she has created wonderful stories that have been read by millions upon millions of children and adults. That's certainly an accomplishment worth rewarding.

I do think it suggests, along with The Great Debaters, that Harvard is making conspicuous efforts to accomodate itself to the great onrushing power of pop culture....

Comments:
Speaking of grammar, that second graph has some issues......

does the accomodation include offering a 'pop-education' too?

Honorary degree, great. Bill Russell got one last year. But Commencement speaker? Does anyone happen to know - does she have something important to say?

How do you define important? Anyone who has singlehandedly revived reading in the English language must have something to say. Or maybe you'd rather hear Barrack Obama talk about Hope?

Do you suppose that is what she will talk about? The English language? I just don't know what topic she would have credibility on, if you'll pardon the grammar. Women in society maybe? I'n not picking a fight, but I don't have a clue what we might expect, or what made Harvard think she would be a great speaker for this occasion.

yes, maybe it will open the door to an influx of applicants from Hogwart interested in pursuing graduate studies.

Last time I attended a Harvard graduation for my brother's graduation, Barbara Jordan was the speaker. Somehow I don't expect this speaker to measure up to what I hoped to hear when I attend this year's commencement for my daughter.
