  The Comeback Kids
It's Hillary over Barack and McCain over Romney and, decisively, Huckabee. (Sorry, Standing Eagle. I coulda told you New Hampshire doesn't go for evangelicals.)

New Hampshire, I think, just saved the presidential aspirations of both senators.

And who knew—Hillary's tears seem to have helped her. She did well with women voters, which she didn't, particularly, in Iowa.

Sometimes, life is good: Rudy Giuliani appeared to finish a single percentage point over Ron Paul.

In other important electoral news, Goose Gossage got elected to the Hall of Fame! He's a terrific pitcher and a sweetheart of a guy, and he absolutely deserves to be in the Hall. Congratulations, Goose.

On the other hand, what about Jim Rice? He deserves it, too...doesn't he?

Comments:
I love the Goose. Used to love his mustache when I was a kid.

Am glad to eat crow re yesterday's results. Huckabee is strong in both MI and SC.

SE

I don't see Huckabee winning Michigan...but, hey, I never stand by my predictions in these things. (Well, maybe on the rare occasions when I'm right.) Making political predictions is a surefire way to look like a dummy, as the pundits just found out.

As did Standing Eagle.

I think Romney will lose Michigan because he lacks the humility to come in as the Prodigal Son. His dad used to be the governor, but then Romney went to the East Coast to do politics, instead of either Utah or Michigan. He's neither fish nor fowl, and everywhere he goes these days he's bewildered when people don't immediately and spontaneously slay the fatted calf for him. ("But look how handsome I am! Can't you guys be nice?" he seems to be always saying.)

Huckabee 37, Romney 33, McCain with his NH bounce 28.

McCain, meanwhile, will go into South Carolina expecting the kind of nasty battle he got last time. Accidentally (as in the case on New Year's Eve with the negative-ad press conference) Huckabee will give head-fakes toward that kind of Bushian negativity and cynicism, and McCain will be ready this time with dirty tricks of his own. But then Huckabee actually WILL run a fundamentally clean campaign and McCain will look old and bitter, and fail (as he failed in his speech last night) to focus on the future and on his strengths. His speech last night was secretly obsessed with his opponents' weaknesses rather than what he can actually offer the country in terms of change. He's forgotten he's the change candidate -- tried to give that title to Romney in a debate -- and in his defensive posture in SC will find himself defending the Iraq War a lot. But the Iraq War is still a key factor in this election and he will find that out to his dismay.

Huckabee 39, McCain 35, Romney 26.

Romney is out and the rout of McCain is on (Republican establishment fundamentally hates him and will think they can shape Huckabee as they did Bush).

How's that grab you?

So, that's a tenner you owe me - right, SE?

Two options: give $10 to the "wheelchair basketball" guy who often sits outside the T stop (not as often as he used to) OR donate $10 to McCain (SITD Honor Code, of course).

Your choice.

Wheelchair basketball it is. (Giving to any Republican in the next decade would surely make my head implode.)

I won't forget to donate.

It's all about the Hamiltons, baby!

>Sputter sputter!<

That seems to be a kid in the COLLEGE.

Nice try, punk. Look me up at Davos and maybe we'll talk over a pitcher of martinis.

Glad to be noticed, of course, as aren't we all?

SE

Sure thing, SE.

Let me guess, you'll order me a martini and ask me to say the first word that comes to my mind that starts with the letter "H". Then you'll ask me why and leave the room while I'm mid-answer.

Am I close?

Adam,

I've got to go with SE on this one—the tone of your post does make you come across as, well, a punk.

I mean, I quote you nicely, I give you props, and then you go all grade school on me? Come on—you're better than that.

RB

I can't imagine who would think that that could possibly make any sense to me.

In any case, we know that Harvard kids all think of the same word that starts with "H," no matter what. Shameless self-promoters, including apparently this snarky Crimson kid with the bow tie. Who does he think he is, Paul Simon?

Sorry, Richard. You're collateral damage. I certainly didn't mean any disrespect, and I didn't think the post reflected anything of the sort towards you. Richard Thomas? Maybe.

After all, if I didn't like (and read) your blog, I wouldn't have spent years sifting through esoteric essays by John McPhee about prep school headmasters just to figure out who SE really is.

All that said, I actually am a punk. The bowtie is really just camouflage. Right, SE?

Well, Adam, I never loved the name Blow, which is part of why I changed it, and certainly no one ever called me Dick (except for some quite aged people) in a sweet way. But, there you are. I think I'm going to let you and SE battle this one out.

Being collateral damage, and all.

Sorry about the poor choice of moniker. I'm usually pretty good at appreciating double-entendre. But given the first rule of my post, your real name is off-limits, so Blow is must be.

Done! Fixed! Blown away, accordingly.

I'll look forward to your continuing discussion with SE, Adam.

Okay, Adam, I admit you piqued my curiosity -- especially with that last bit about headmasters. Do you think I run (or used to run) the University? Some obscure ink-stained sub-provost with a chip on his shoulder? I don't think you really think that, or you wouldn't be so evasive.

So you did get one thing right: I like McPhee. I did some Googling and here's where I think we're at.

Goldenberg thinks I'm -- well, ok, let me walk you through it.

Thinking out loud here. Tell me how I do, Adam.

The guy in McPhee's book about a prep-school headmaster (clearly there's some clue in that super-awkward sentence) is -- Google says! -- an old Mr Chips type named Boyden at Deerfield. This seemed to go nowhere -- but Adam's got that big eagle on his page and he seems to think himself clever.

So here it is: Adam thinks I'm a Boyden a gilded cage. (Is he from the Bronx? That I won't bother to Google, cause he's not that famous and probably never will be.)

Boid in a gilded cage. 'Gilded' is clearly affluence, which narrows it down only a little (this is Harvard we're talking about). But 'gilded cage' gets me thinking Gilded Age: robber barons, opulence, and amorality. The Business School!

And this fits very nicely because the Deerfield at Harvard is of course Allston, the dearest field that Larry Summers ever set out to buy.

But that leaves the cage. And this is where I have to take my hat off to Adam's fiendish cleverness. I'm an Eagle that can't fly away -- cause I'm in the gilded cage. I belong in prison perhaps? I probably seem to Adam to be allied with Larry Summers .....

Okay, Adam. It was a worthy try, and a merry little romp through the wordplay (though 'leafing' still hangs me up -- perhaps greenbacks, American dollars pouring into Russia? "I had as leaf the town crier spoke my lines"? --Hamlet).

But no, Adam, I'm not Andrei Schleifer.

Can't blame you for taking your shot. It's the Super Bowl for every team that plays the Patriots, right?

Better luck next time -- or perhaps you'd like to correct my choplogic.

Standing Eagle

Now I know Hillary felt. Adam disrespects me. Sob.

"How" H. felt that was.

I'm Standing Eagle.

No I'm Standing Eagle!

Those last two guys were not me. Richard, can you do something about the security around here? (Also the formatting.)

Richard T., GREAT line. Just proofread and you'll be truly wicked on here.

But maybe you're the good witch and I'm the bad witch. Ham and eggs, baby!

Standing Eagle

Distracted by that great (oops, being sycophantic) choplogic, SE. I was also tracked into woodworking not typing back in my NZ day.
