  This One's for Standing Eagle
The New York Times analyzes a new phenomenon: the arrival of the celebrity blog-comment poster.

There are those who have blogs. Then there are those who leave comments on other people’s blogs, sometimes lots and lots of comments, sometimes nasty, clever, brilliant, monumentally stupid or filthy comments.

Sound familiar? (Well, except for the stupid/filthy part.)

Comments:
Doesn't sound familiar to me.

But your readers might be interested to know that this guy --

"“You are one of the millions of people who sit at a computer all day,” said Marshall Poe, a professor of history and new media at the University of Iowa, who has studied Internet communities. “Every hour you have 10 minutes where you’re not doing anything productive at work, and you can’t look at porn. So you make a comment and fulfill this desire to show yourself off as a smarty-pants.” "

-- did a stint at Harvard, concluding it with a couple years as Senior Tutor in one of the river Houses. The last I heard he was at the Atlantic Monthly alongside a former student or two of mine. (Over to you, Harry.)

Thanks for the shout-out, Richard. I think.

Standing Eagle
not currently at work, which means I'm CHOOSING to look at this instead of porn (for now)

Sure does sound familiar to me, Standing Eagle...especially the lots and lots part...and everything else fits too...the filthy not too often or RB would just delete you. I'd miss you if you weren't there though...given that last comment I'll stay anonymous today.

Another poster once called Standing Eagle "the best of this blog." Not a bad description.

To 9:00pm: you're certifiable. But it cannot be gainsaid that SE has an aura of celebrity around here. Kudos to you!

Kudos to anyone who correctly uses "gainsaid" in a sentence! That's one you don't hear a lot.

Methinks the only people who would even try to use it must already know how to use it. Of course, I daresay that could be a bootless suggestion.
