  Meet the New Sox
Has winning taken all the fun out of rooting for the Red Sox? Are they a more boring team than they used to be? Wouldn't it be better to go back to the old ways?

Brian McGrory asks these very important questions in today's Globe.

The first order of business is to admit it to ourselves: 2004 was more meaningful. Back then, and in the 86 years that preceded it, we knew who we were. We were hapless, though never hopeless. We were the ones that always had something to overcome - a curse, a seemingly in surmountable deficit, a little-brother syndrome.

... what have we become?

And here's the answer we know but dread: Another free-spending, big market team that buys its way into the postseason with every expectation that it will win.

Is it possible that the Yankees have become the likeable underdogs while the Sox have become the soulless machine?

It is!

Comments:
Unabashed bullshit.

Like the bad guy in the cliche final scene of so many action movies..."You and me, we're the same!"

So this is the part where we would blow your head off.

Well, that would be assuming that you are the good guy.

Manny doesnt have soul? Are you kidding?

I wouldn't actually say that Manny has soul, no. I mean, he's a character and a great hitter, but have we ever seen a great depth of feeling from him?

"Is it possible that the Yankees have become the likeable underdogs while the Sox have become the soulless machine?"

I'm afraid not. After the way they treated Torre? Clearly, the Rockies (for that matter, as well as every other low salary team that plays well) are now the likeable underdogs.

no great depth of feeling from manny? do you know how many days he's missed to visit on of his grandmothers sick grandmothers or how many times he's really really really wanted to be traded from boston?

honestly though, he plays baseball like a kid, while also being one of the greatest right handed hitters to ever play the game. and in no way is that a bad thing.

And who are we comparing the Sox to?

No way Richard. My God, you really are a fanatic, aren't you?

I am curious as to what constitutes a soul in baseball. In fact, soul would seem to get in the way of playing, as would the medication that Manny clearly needs.
