Is It The End of the World?
No, I'm not talking about the Bush presidency, global warming, or China's environmental policies.

The Yankees have lost. It's wait till next year for the Yankees.

I am too distraught to say much about this disaster of a series. But I will say a few things.

You can't blame Joe Torre for the fact that his best pitcher was terrible—twice. However, I do question starting Chien Ming Wang on three days rest, which he'd never done in his career, after his initial outing against the Indians was so awful.

I also question starting Roger Clemens after he hadn't pitched in over two weeks.

One must give the Indians credit. How many two-out RBIs did they have? 12, 13? Those were backbreaking. And their pitching was superlative. (Although the Yankees should have knocked Paul Bird out last night a couple of times.)

Even with his two hits last night, Derek Jeter had a terrible series. So did Jorge Posada. So did A-Rod. I knew A-Rod was going to hit a home run with no one one base. No pressure there.

The Yankees need a first baseman who can hit and field. It may be time to say goodbye to Jason Giambi.

I am on the fence about Joe Torre. He's a great guy and a class act, and he does things, I'm sure, that none of us realize or appreciate. But how many years in a row have the Yankees underperformed in the playoffs?

Hideki Matsui. Eh. Great guy, but talk about your quiet statistics.....

Pitching, pitching, pitching. Time for Mussina to go. And Kyle Farnsworth. And Clemens, of course.

Jorge Posada should be signed for two years. I don't see any other switch-hitting catchers around who hit .330 this year....

A-Rod...jeez, I don't know. I'm so tired of the playoff fold. It'll take $30 million to keep him. Is a player who consistently chokes in the playoffs really worth that, no matter how good his regular season performance?

This is going to be a busy off-season.

Go Indians!

Comments:
shurely "Go Red Sox"?

F Red Sox

Dies irae time.

Go Tribe!

It's a bad sports (long) weekend for most of your blog, R-Brad. You: the Yanks. Richard Thomas: the All Blacks. Judith Ryan: Wallabies. Standing Eagle: well, considering the other big weekend upsets... USC, perhaps?

Why on earth would Posada sign a two-year deal, especially with Torre likely gone? With the amazing year he had, many teams will be happy to offer him a four-year deal. If the Yanks want to keep him (which they have to), it's going to be for a lot more than what the Sox gave Varitek (4/40).

Similarly, "time to say goodbye to Jason Giambi"? Where's he going? He's got another year on his contract and no one wants him. The Yankees will have the pay some team about $15 million just to take him.

Also, while A-Rod didn't carry the Yankees the way he can, Jeter positively stunk up the joint. His GIDPs did much, much more to sink this team than A-Rod's solo shot did. I mean, come on.

It may not be the end of the world for the Yankees, but Harvard beat Yale and Stanford in the ratings just released. This is likely to please all the dignataries descending in Cambridge this week for the Presidential festivities...

But Yale beats Harvard and Stanford at Law! So there!

HBS and HMS are the top schools in their respective fields!

Go Crimson!

And the English and Political Science Programs are at the top too. What did this Derek Bok do in only a year? Looks like the standing of all programs improved considerably.

Look, everyone. We only get ONE opportunity a year to rub it in Richard's face when the Yankees lose and the Red Sox advance -- won't you please take advantage of it? So, save your interesting, relevant Harvard snark for another post, OK?

In other news: GO SOX!

Not all programs. Look again!

Harvard now behind Vanderbilt? Now that IS the end of the world.

Hey Red Sox guy -- you've been ignored, and by Cambridgeites no less! Some fans you have up there - more interested in their navels than in their baseball team. Can you say "Quinn Buckner"?

It's only the end of the world in that tiny island nation known as New York City (okay, maybe some parts of it are on the mainland). Elsewhere in the world, including Cambridge, we are sick of the Yankees and their obnoxious fans and their sense of entitlement. Suck it up, crybabies!

Shame on you, Richard!!! GO SOX!!!

Talk about "sense of entitlement"...who now has a sense of entitlement if not the Sox Nation. Go Indians!

One title does not entitlement make. GO SOX!!
Now (more or less) over the All Black debacle.

It is interesting to see that Harvard's standing in the US News rankings has improved in most schools. This shows how helpful it is to have the largest endowment in the world.

It is also interesting to see that a few schools have worsened their position. Perhaps they need Presidential attention.

Richard -- I know you are disappointed, but are you really surprised? Did you really think the Yankees were better than the Indians? The Tribe has been doing this sort of thing all year.

One thing about the post-season: it always amplifies your weaknesses as a team. And the Yankees weakness is pitching. It's been that way all year, and it was hidden in their 79-39 tear. But it was always there.

Well, yes. Agreed. But the Yankees did beat the Indians six straight this year. And the Yankee pitching that was so disastrous during the series was essentially Chien Ming Wang, a 19-game winner whom no one expected to pitch so poorly. Nor did anyone expect the Yankee hitters, with the possible exception of A-Rod, to flail as they did. So yes, I thought the Yankees would beat the Indians.

Also, no one's going to sign a 36-year-old catcher to a four-year deal. When catchers lose it, they decline fast.
