  Drew Faust in the Crimson
In the Crimson, columnist Alexandra Petri writes of the societal pressure on women to look good and how it affects their happiness. In this context, she says, Drew Faust is a breath of fresh air.

I have great expectations for the new Harvard president. For when I think of Drew Gilpin Faust, “effortlessly hot,” is not the first phrase that springs to mind. Nor is it the second, third, or tenth.

In this context, Faust shines like a beacon of hope. Perhaps her election will inspire more of us to set down the make-up bag and toe buffer—or whatever that horrifying-looking implement is—and find more productive ways to spend our time.

I'll leave it at that....

Comments:
And perhaps some of us will put down the keyboard as well...

Think I know what Petri is trying to say while she's patronizing those of us who are less than "effortlessly hot" but she's done it very badly and should, perhaps find more productive ways to spend her time.

Anonymous 9:02, I think you misunderstand Petri's comments. She says that Drew Faust is *not* "effortlessly hot." Drew Faust has a natural look--a haircut, not a hairdo, for example. Faust looks good, but looks are not her main focus, and so they don't distract from her actions and words. That's what Petri is saying. In that vein, can we have a moratorium on the word "hot" in this blog?

no, we can't, you dumb bunny.

I disagree, anon 11:42. Sounds like Petri was calling Drew ugly. Trying to make her the idol of unattractive women everywhere. If her intention was not that, she wrote it very badly.

I was effortlessly hot this summer.

This winter I anticipate being effortlessly cold.

Presently mildly comfortable, except with Petri's dumb analysis.

anon 9:02 was probably Petri. Only one who understands and appreciates her article.

I meant anon 11:42.

Let's have a moratorium on "the" as well.

No more "the", and "hot"!

Good luck, Rich!

This is anonymous 11:42 again. No, I'm not Petri. But I have to remain anonymous in case people like anonymous 12:07 think I'm ugly. Which, of course, I'm not! (Just getting a little hot under the collar about all this emphasis on physical beauty.)

Lets just say it: women often wish they didn't have to subject themselves to judgments based on their physical appearance, but they also know deep down they wouldn't be women if they didn't. It's a burden, admittedly -- all that primping for the benefit of the male of the species -- and quite galling, I suppose, when you're smart enough to compete on brains alone. But what would the world be without sex, which is, after all, what we're talking about? Lets just all chill out and admit RB was right: physical appearance totally matters!

It seems quite obvious that physical appearance matters. It's just sometimes baffling why it matters quite so much on this blog. Yes, Drew Faust got a makeover and yes she probably did this to look good as President of Harvard. But this doesn't mean it would be nice if people could focus on her ideas and let go of the idea that focusing on her appearance is deep and thougt provoking.

sorry for the typos. I was so busy worrying that you all would think I was ugly that I didn't proofread.

Here's how to resolve this: everyone on this site go to www.hotornot.com and get themselves rated. Anyone with a 70% approval or higher, can stay on. Anyone who fails that benchmark must either get plastic surgery or go somewhere else.

Thank you all for making me chuckle. 11:42 I agree with 9:02's (ha! in the age of technology can you get away w/ making a string of numbers possesive) comments but I do agree with your interpretation...why couldn't Petri be that clear?

signed,
THE HOT...

Drew Faust looks the same as she always has. Why does everyone say she had a makeover? What's the basis of these comments?

so people who are "effortlessly hot" are incapable of being more than that?

yes, they are only capable of that. So please just be quiet, sit there and look pretty....

Petri's dish couldn't be clear, because it was "effortlessly hot".

(She was too busy trying to be clever than she muddled up her meaning.)

Nicely put. Not.

it was kind of a peculiar column. rather than being inspired by anything drew faust has said or done (in fact suggesting that the whole inauguration was boring), this author suggests that she's inspired by what? faust's lack of grooming skills? faust's lack of hotness? that one can still achieve even if one has hair that just sits there? that you don't have to be pretty to run large institutions?

petri is a stoopid doodoo head. i'm ugly.
