  Down with A Capella
IvyGate is having a competition to determine the worst a capella group in the Ivy League.

One is tempted to answer all of them....

Given that Harvard apparently has too many student groups, and that no one likes a capella groups except for the people who are in them...perhaps there's a natural solution here?

Comments:
Oh THAT IS HARSH
I went to Brown in the 80s and I did not mind the a-capella group there except they always sang California dreamin, every time they performed. I wonder if they still do?

there are some good a capella groups out there; on the other hand, its very interesting to ponder the antipathy you, like so many, have toward them. is it the old fashioned song stylings? is it the lack of a R&R beat? is it that they seem inherently gay? or is it that they're just too sincere and unironic?

when i see an an capella group i feel tarred with gayness

maybe you should leave that big feather boa at home then

Long live the Persuasions.

But that name--is that gay code?

Richard, it's possible that you just hate barbershop or doo wop music. But that's not the compleet definition of "a capella" singing. Here's what Wikipedia has to say about it:

A Cappella (Italian: “in the church style”) music is vocal music or singing without instrumental accompaniment, or a piece intended to be performed in this way. A cappella was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato style. In the 19th century a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music.[1] In modern usage, a cappella often refers to an all-vocal performance of any style, including barbershop, doo wop, and modern pop/rock.

Ok, I take that back. Sorry for that, a little too mean. Trying to be more positive these days...a capella maybe isn't the worst thing in the entire world, I'm reasonably somewhat pretty certain...

Squatting Whatever: you're a very poor stand-in for SE. he NEVER gets deleted!

Hey, I didn't delete him, he deleted himself.

No way! How do you do that?

9:27, you're totally anonymous and therefore rather meaningless... That's much worse. And obviously my screen name was a little gamesmanship with SE since I - initially - found his name a little arrogant and ridiculous. I've come to really respect him, but I like to be consistent with my comments, so the name stays.

And I deleted myself because I thought I was being a little meaner than I should have been about these a capella groups. I now realize that it's a disease, and we shouldn't insult the victims unnecessarily.
