Welcome to the End of the World
New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority has signed a deal to allow cell phone use in subway stations.

Because, apparently, waiting for a late, crowded train on a dirty, crowded platform isn't stressful enough.

Comments:
Agree on the cellphones issue. But the subways work pretty damn well most of the time. Quit whining.

Richard,

Is it stressful for you to talk on the phone or to listen to other people talk on the phone?

In either case I recommend an iPod.

SE

I have an iPod. But even they do not shut out the cell phone users and the inevitable, "Ladies and gentlemen, I am sorry to disrupt your morning, but I am homeless/HIV positive/Vietnam vet/single parent/disabled/proud marketer of Street News/etc."

And to 9:23...are you a New Yorker? Have you not noticed that in the past decade the subways have become increasingly crowded and dirty? Do you ever take the 6 train?

Richard,

Try a pair of Shure E2C headphones. I use them with my iPod, have field tested them on the NY Subway, and they did quite well at shutting out the ambient noise, distractions, etc... and your music sounds much better.

You sounded like John Rocker for a moment there, RB.

RPB: "Do you ever take the 6 train?"

Is that on the West side? My mother once said "there is nothing over there that concerns you"...

OK, it's been awhile since she spoke...

John Rocker? Nah. Just someone who is pretty skeptical about some of these solicitations. NY Mag once did a piece showing how much money people make begging on the subways, and it was actually more than a lot of jobs....
