More on Larry Craig
In the Nation, Harvard's
Timothy Patrick McCarthy considers the Larry Craig affair.
[T]he real problem is not so much hypocrisy as hatred. The modern-day Republican Party hates homosexuals because so-called born-again Christians think homosexuality is a sin--more so than, say, poverty or war. But when it comes to people like Foley, Haggard and Craig, the tragedy is more personal than political: As gay men, they hate themselves even more than they hate the rest of us.
Meanwhile, Larry Craig has sent his children out to defend him. On Good Morning America, his daughter Shea Howell and son Michael Craig say that their father "
was a victim of circumstance, in the wrong place at the wrong time."
The children asked their father if he had ever been unfaithful to their mother in any way.
He said no, and they believed him.
What's interesting is this line from the ABCnews.com story: "Howell and Craig, who maintain their father's heterosexuality, said that even if he were gay, they would still support him. 'Gay or straight, that part doesn't matter.'"
Which is sort of a wonderful thing to say, and good for them, even though they weirdly refuse to admit that their dad probably is gay. But if they believe that, one wonders if they ever asked their dad about his anti-gay voting record?
I guess it's encouraging that the children of anti-gay Republicans are more decent than their parents, but there is an ongoing GOP hypocrisy of being perfectly fine with gay people in their own lives but discriminating against them in public life, and it does get boring.
