Mitt Romney Is Freaking Me Out
I understand from the folks at 02138 that I got some hate mail on my recent profile of Mitt Romney accusing me of bias, Republican-hating, and so on. Which is funny, because I thought the story was considerably more balanced that most of what I've read about Romney. I tried to go beyond all the stuff about flip-flopping—not that you can ignore it entirely, but it's only a part of the story—and consider some other sides of the man.

The other reason I find the criticism that I was too hard on Romney bizarre is that Romney keeps making himself look stupid without any help from the media.

First there was the whole "I'm a hunter, hear me roar" fiasco.

Now Fox News has asked Romney his favorite novel. His reply?

Battlefield Earth, by Scientologist founder L. Ron Hubbard.

“I’m not in favor of his religion by any means,” Mr. Romney, a Mormon, said. “But he wrote a book called ‘Battlefield Earth’ that was a very fun science-fiction book.

That's just great, Mitt. A third of the country already thinks you're a wack job because you're a Mormon. Now you say that your favorite novel is by a Scientologist. (And apparently a pretty awful book even if read in a vacuum.)

Way to reassure the voters....

Comments:
Here's hoping it's his favorite movie, too.

Richard,

Your Mitt Romney article was fair minded.
This from an uncomitted GOP member in the midwest.
Though you didn't use one of my favorite political putdowns:
The quote is attributed to Eugene McCarthy about George Romney was the best.It went something like this:

"George Romney didn't need a Brain Washing when a light rinse will do".

Seriously,The Mitt Romney piece was balanced.Lots of facts not too many assertions.Good political writing.

Thank you; I'm glad you think so.

Wow. I mean, I'm surprised that I'm surprised, because--and I'm a Republican--I already thought/knew Romney was lame in many, many ways...but Battlefield Earth...L-Ron...I'm at a loss for words. He just combined two of the most hilarious and brutal South Park episodes with that one. For anyone who didn't see the Scientology episode (because Tom Cruise lobbied heavily that it not be re-aired, and it hasn't), look it up on YouTube. Even if you hate South Park, it's actually the true mythology of what Scientologists believe...and it's one of the funniest things ever created.

I'm struggling to think why he would say this was his favorite novel. Usually politicians claim they are reading a particular book to score some points (they say they are reading a trashy mystery or adventure to show they are one of the guys, or that they are reading a big history/philosophy/biography to show they are deep, thoughtful leaders) or to appeal to a constituency. In this case, I can't see either. So perhaps, just perhaps, this is really his favorite novel, and he just loves it, the way I love the Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Leguin. Maybe, in other words, this is the first time he's honest about something.

But 6:13, that is a scary thought on a number of levels...

Putting side the fact that Scientology is the biggest bunch of nonsensical drivel in human history – idiotic sci-fi nonsense that L. Ron Hubbard conned people into paying huge sums of money for as some kind of “spiritual truth” .. putting aside all that … plain and simple, Battlefield Earth was a blazon piece of crap.

An utterly idiotic plot, dripping with perversion and sickness – as was Hubbard.

98% of the sales of this piece of crap came from Scientologists buying multiple copies.

What in the name of Xenu was Romeny thinking?

Richard --
that was exactly my point. If that's the only way he can be honest, he has a long way to go before he can convince me to vote for him.
