  The Admissions Backlash Continues
In the Times, Michael Winerip realizes that his kids aren't going to Harvard. Also, that life goes on.

I came to understand that my own focus on Harvard was a matter of not sophistication but narrowness. I grew up in an unworldly blue-collar environment. Getting perfect grades and attending an elite college was one of the few ways up I could see.

My four have been raised in an upper-middle-class world. They look around and see lots of avenues to success.

Comments:
It's fascinating what become the Times's "most e-mailed stories." I've been paying attention for a while. They are almost never about Iraq, Guantanamo, the Supreme Court, even the VaTech shootings. They are about college admissions (the Marilee Jones resignation preceded Winerip as no. 1 for over 24 hrs), homes and real estate, working out & health, etc. Here's a new parlor game for the Internet Age: while you're reading the Times, guess whether X is a top 5 article or not, and go to nytimes.com and check.
