The Deanship
Well! Yesterday's post about the Crimson article certainly sparked a vigorous discussion. Thanks to all for participating.
Meantime, some new names have cropped up in the race for the deanship. To wit....and in no particular order....

Always look for who benefits: Who is behind the attacks on Theda Skocpol orchestrated by media leaks? Nancy Rosenbloom and her supporters are the likeliest suspects. She has maneuvered since last spring for the deanship (claims that she "does not want it" are hilarious), and her supporters have to make sure no other nonscience female is in serious contention. NR would protect the status quo. There are powerful people who want her, some who are on or near the advisory group cited by the reporters as sources. (Funny thing is Rosenbloom is not respected much around FAS.) Crimson kids need to look closely at what many faculty think about all the contenders -- and probe the behind the scenes interests of their own leaking sources.

Nancy Rosenblum was pro-Larry Summers. She's reputed to be a good department chair, but would she have wide support from the faculty?

Why are there so few women on these lists? Has everyone just decided that having a woman president is enough?

Two other important jobs are open at the same time: Dean of the Radcliffe Institute and University Librarian. Neither of those would have to go to an arts&sciences professor, but it seems they naturally would. And now, of course, there is the position of dean of the arts&sciences graduate school as well. And also the curricular report recommends that the new Gen Ed curriculum be put in the hands of a senior faculty member (why not the dean of the college?). It actually looks like a pretty shallow pool from which to fill all those jobs. Either that or Harvard has too many of these jobs. Is Harvard different from other places in some relevant way?
