  Shleifer's Words
Marcella Bombardieri got a statement from Andrei Shleifer regarding his loss of title:

"I was a Professor of Economics last week, and I am a Professor of Economics this week," Shleifer said in a written statement. "My students, my colleagues and my work are what matter to me."

We can assume this is spin. After all, Shleifer didn't worry too much about his students when he was spending all that time in Russia. And if he was so concerned about his colleagues, he might not have put them in the position of having to stand up for a profiteer (or not).

That statement is also a diss to Whipple V.N. Jones, whoever that may have been. Sorry, Mr. Jones! Your endowed chair didn't mean that much to me anyway.

One wishes that Shleifer would have the grace to say something like, "You know, I made some serious mistakes, and I understand why Harvard needs to take action as a result. I don't like to lose my title, which has been an honor to hold, but I take responsibility for my actions that led to the change, and I hope to do better in the future."

Wouldn't that be a good lesson for Shleifer's students? After all, he really, really cares about them....

Comments:
I was amazed by the candor shown by Professor Feldman when he told the Crimson ( in re Shleifer's Whipple professorship)that
“Endowed chairs are mainly a marketing tool the University uses to get money." That little nugget might interest some prospective would-be donors...

The econ department has not distinguished itself in this matter.

Gary, not Marty, Feldman, so Physics, not Economics -- though you are generally correct

Marty's last name is Feldstein, not Feldman, so I'm not sure what either Richard or anonymous at 10:03 a.m. are talking about here.

I'm referring to the fact that no one from the department has expressed any public concern about this matter, only support for Shleifer. While I can see that it's a difficult position, and speaking in public doesn't always make you new friends, isn't there at least one econ professor troubled enough by what Shleifer did to say something about it publicly? Does no one care?

If I was him and you were my PR guy and that was the mea culpa you gave me to read to the press, I'd fire you on the spot.

Well, coupla-three things.

First things first: I think that'd be "If I were he," not "If I was him...."

Second, I wouldn't work as Andrei Shleifer's PR guy.

Third, if the situation were just about "public relations," about "spin," about how to obfuscate and equivocate, you'd be right to fire someone who gave you that advice.

And if it were just a question of doing the right thing—as it is— then you wouldn't need a PR person for that. Just a conscience.

What it's about is making a statement that isn't super-lame. Nice catch on the grammar, though.

If presumptuousness were a crime, bloggers would all be political prisoners.

How's this for a non-super-lame statement:

"God willing, we will prevail, in peace and freedom from fear, and in true health, through the purity and essence of our natural... fluids."

P.O.E. baby!
