  Meanwhile, in Apparently Unrelated News
China is commencing a slaughter of an estimated half-million dogs because of a rabies scare, its second such extermination in the past few days....

...while pervy billionaire Jeffrey Epstein has been charged with soliciting sex from prostitutes.

The Crimson points out that New York gubernatorial and attorney general candidates Eliot Spitzer and Mark Green have both returned donations from Epstein. You'd think that would be enough hard news for a NYT story, no? No.

Now, here's a quote that I don't get at all.

But a grand jury found the witnesses in the affidavit released by the police department not credible, according to Epstein ‘s defense attorney, Jack A. Goldberger.

In an attempt to discredit the reliability of the girls’ testimony, [Alan] Dershowitz gave the police copies of two myspace.com profiles of girls who testified in the affidavit against Epstein, according to a Palm Beach Police report,

One girl’s profile showed messages from her friends that “contain some profanity,” according to the report. The report further says that the other girl’s profile “states that her interests include music, theater and weed (Marijuana).

Wait a second. This is 2006. A lawyer is attacking someone's credibility because she likes to smoke a little dope? Or received posts on a webpage that contain profanity?

It is Dershowitz's nature to throw mud whenever he thinks it will be effective, that's clear. What I don't get is how a grand jury finds that convincing.

There must be more to this story....

Comments:
The article says the grand jury found the girls' testimony unreliable and goes on to say that Dershowitz presented evidence from their MySpace ads. The juxtaposition suggests causality, but I'm certain the GJ would not have found them unreliable because of what was on MySpace, despite what the lawyer is attempting to suggest. Note that defense lawyers aren't allowed inside the proceeding, only the prosecutors, so this is speculation on his part. The more to the story is likely this: was the prosecutor trying to get an indictment on the charge of underage sex or trying not to? It has been suggested that the DA's office gave Epstein the "Mel Gibson treatment". That would be the question.

Nasty business, that Chinese dog massacre. Used clubs and beat em to death, apparently. Ought to go over there and kick some ass. Once upon a time Mao killed all the starlings in China and the country was then infested by locusts. Damn people won't learn. Dogs with rabies have spittle dripping off their fangs. Pretty noticeable, what? Rajiv, another G&T, hurry hurry.

Who is the last poster and can someone lock him up?
