  A New Dean at Harvard?
Rumor has it that Derek Bok is close to picking Dennis Thompson as the new dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.....

As Matt Drudge would say, developing....

P.S. Several e-mailers suggest that this rumor is unlikely and that President Bok is some time off from making a decanal pick. We'll see.

Comments:
Harry Lewis is doing a book signing and talk at the Coop on May 15th. Hope you'll publicize it. BTW, have you gotten to see his book yet?

Have not seen the book yet....

If true, this is infuriating. An advisory committee was just appointed and had their first meeting, about logistics, on Friday. If the choice has already been made, obviously the committee, which has just begun consulting with faculty, had no input.

Richard, I read excerpts from Harry Lewis' book at the Chronicle site. It reminds me of your "Harvard Rules" in some ways. Can't wait to buy it.
By the way, when is your next book coming out and what is it about?

Two great articles: one on Warsh's economic principals bog re Shleifer-Summers and the Russia scandal, and one in this month's Harvard Business Review re when and if CEOs should apologize. That article gives the Summers example of multiple albeit late and perhaps halfearted apologies--and stated that the "intrinsic aptitude" speech led ultimately to his forced resignation--a controversial perspective.

Interesting. Is the HBR article online?

I'll bet the rumor about the Dean is a garbled report of the appointment of a different Thompson. We've heard that Bok is appointing Carole Thompson to conduct an undercover investigation of FAS administration. She was Knowles deputy and is now retired.

And Dennis Thompson's wife, no?

More intriguingly...an undercover investigation of FAS administration? What does that mean?

Today's Crimson (4/19/06) gives an account of the problems in University Hall. As a previous comment suggests, this is probably what Carol Thompson has been asked to investigate.
