  Katie Couric, Anchor Babe?
Has anyone else noticed that Katie Couric's face is looking a little, well, tight lately?

I'm fascinated by the amount of media attention paid to whether Couric is going to leave the Today show to anchor CBS News. Consider this Times story, in which all the anonymous sources emphasize how amicable everything is over at NBC, even if Katie does leave, which means that the atmosphere at NBC is incredibly tense and the long knives are out. (Katie Couric is roundly disliked by people who work for the Today show...and by some people, such as myself, who have been on it.) Don't people in the press realize that no one watches the evening news anymore? (I'll be mildly surprised if the network news even exists, at least in its current format, in five years.)

Anyway, the point is that no one looks that good after years and years of getting up at 3 A.M. without some serious surgical help.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Comments:
What is the problem--does it bother you that Katie looks younger than you do? In fact, I would have expected you to understand that it is symbolically important that all evening anchors not be white males...for too long, the voice of gravitas in America has been uniquely white male (as in President, majority leader, etc)

Actually, from your politically correct perspective, I would think that you'd want all evening news anchors to be white males, to reflect their growing irrelevance.

nice return in that shout match.
Who CARES if women anchor ALL
network evening news; nobody
watches anyway. Whoopee! Women
get their shot post mortem...

I love it when this otherwise pseudo-highminded site gets catty!

To anonymous number one, the only hole in your brave argument is that if you think cutesy katie with the fringe on top is going to be a female (albeit white) "voice of gravitas," you need to remove the ear wax and actually listen to her.

For RB, a point: playing the "PC card" ought to be beneath you.

Finally, before we entomb network news, can someone tell me where I'm supposed to turn for news when the next plane hits? This blog?

Once we get universal high-def TV, being an achor is going to be like being a stewardess on Singapore Airlines--retirement age: 25.

I play the PC card so rarely, it gives me great ironic pleasure when I do.

So complete this sentence (apropos our fair Katie): "If the face fits, ......"
